Show Opening: WK Interact – “WK 360 A 25 Year Survey” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery Pop-up NYC, March 8 2013

Show card

“In a fine art universe where the sum of pictures all comes down to a kind of nature morte, WK is about the life still unfolding rather than the still life. Considered in relation to his studio work, where violence, sexuality, fetish, terror and the devolutionary descent of dehumanization lurk in passages of brutal irony that edge towards sarcasm, the benevolence so evident in WK’s public art must be viewed as coming from a position where creativity constitutes a kind of critique. WK’s romance with the city is not the abiding comfort of an old lover but the frisson of new flirtation constructed of a constantly rejuvenating sense of discovery.” — Carlo McCormick

Last Friday New York‘s long time French representative, artist WK Interact, opened his latest show in conjunction with Jonathan Levine Gallery at a pop-up location on 557 West 23rd street. Simply titled WK 360 the show acts as a mid-career survey of WK's work, celebrating the last 25 years of the artist's dynamic career.  Included in the show are a series of works on cardboard, paper and panels, canvases, large multi-paneled collages, wheat pasted doors, skate boards, classic WK espionage gear and even pillows that are all rendered in WK's signature stark palette. Memorabilia and photographs are also on display and serve to document his early years and evolution as a street artist.

WK Installation outside the pop-up location

Often with artists who are associated with the street art movement gallery shows can lose something in the move to a clean and crisp gallery environment, I’m happy to say that while WK’s work is so successful because of the way it is presented on the streets and interacts with the urban environment, it is equally captivating and full of motion in this setting. This is in part because  the collection is quite impressive when housed in one large location and has been put together with much love and attention to detail.  As a long-time fan of WK’s work the show satisfied my senses beyond any expectations, and expectations were indeed high.

NY fans wait in line, in the snow,  to be able to get a limited edition signed print.

Always the first-class person that he is WK gifted the first 100 attendees with one of three limited and signed edition screen prints and was more than happy to discuss his work with anyone who approached him or asked to take a photo.

Make sure to make it over to get a look at the work first-hand if you are in NY anytime from now till March 30th when the show closes. WK himself is often at the location snapping photos of  people enjoying the show just as enthusiastically as those shooting his work, who knows maybe you might get lucky and be immortalized in one of the artist’s wheat pastes in the future!

Show Opening: Futura - "Future-Shock" @ Valmorbida, NYC

NYC Graffiti legend, Futura, had his first major New York show in 12 years open yesterday on behalf of Andy Valmorbida and PM Tenore in the meat-packing district of the city.  “Future-Shock”, curated by Nemo Librizzi, is everything a fan of the artist could hope for and fans came by the droves.  Although this is a freshly created group of works, it definitely felt like a mini retrospective to those familiar with the artists work as viewers were treated to Lenny’s early 80’s style, to the signature atoms he is probably most known for, to his topographical renderings, to his most recent abstractions. The new paintings, of which there were many and massive in size, were a site to behold, representing a collective experience for the artist who chooses spray paint as his main tool.

The venue was a large and uniquely lit space filled with hardcore fans, to major collectors, to celebrities, including Kool Keith and Fab 5 Freddy, to other graffiti royalty and the press. The model-esque Staff manned the space with a never ending supply of cocktails and wine as the night progressed and the space rapidly filled. A DJ supplied a mix of classic hip hop which added to the party like vibe and overall positive spirit you could feel lighting up the room. Of course Futura himself made time to sign all the aspiring artist’s black books that were in attendance and pose for pictures.

In actuality I can’t really do the show justice via my words and photos so I beg of you to check it all out in person if you are in the New York area starting from today when it opens to the public at Valmorbida on 560 Washington St. The exhibition is presented with the support of VistaJet, Bombardier Aerospace and RVCA Artist Network Program.

David Yow art exhibition opening @ Fuse Gallery

Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow will showcase his new collection of work "GLASS GAS MASK at Fuse Gallery in NYC TONIGHT (8/24) with an opening reception at 7PM. The exhibition runs through September 21st.
Working both digitally and by hand, artist and musician David Yow produces a body of work that has a a dark sense of humor. He utilizes design elements of line, texture, and shape in conjunction with found images and objects to enhance, alter and create graphically bold imagery with an edge. In his digital works, Yow delineates images to exaggerate an emotion to absurdity; and in the paintings, he integrates acrylic, collage, charcoal, pencil, spit, hair, crayon, wood, etc. to craft a deviant somewhat biomorphic creation, that is, or was, living .
While having an illustrious music career in the bands Scratch Acid and the Jesus Lizard, David Yow also has a long time passion for visual art. In his pre-punk college years, David completely submerged himself in painting and drawing
Despite being previously featured in other exhibitions in the NYC area, tonight is Yow's first solo venture in our fair city. Preview some more of his work at his website.
