Arca has
been keeping pretty active as of late and with the release of his new LP, Xen
on November 4th, it only makes sense to be out their promoting the material
with appearances, remixes and videos. “Now You Know” is the latest song from
the forthcoming LP to get the video treatment and it stays true to the
Venezuelan’s aesthetic matching the producer’s creepy alien like sounds to a T.
Jesse Kandra once again handles the animation on this one, choosing to find inspiration
from fireworks.

Listen: TĀLĀ - "Everybody’s Free"
London-based pop artist/producer TĀLĀ has shared
another new song from her arsenal; this one is called “Everybody’s Free,” a song made famous by Quindon Tarver, and it
continues down the path of spiritual euphoria with it’s clever use of Arabic
influenced samples and ghostly vocals which have come to define the artist. The track
will appear on the forthcoming Alchemy EP due out in the near future.

Listen: The History of Big Black From Bulldozer To Atomizer
Jughead’s Basement released
his latest podcast highlighting records that are important to him, the focus of
this month’s being on Evanston, Illinois’ legendary, Big Black.
Founded by singer and guitarist Steve Albini, the
band's initial lineup also included guitarist Santiago
Durango and bassist Jeff
Pezzati, both of Naked Raygun. In 1985 Pezzati was replaced by Dave Riley, who played on Big Black's
two full-length studio albums, Atomizer (1986)
and Songs About Fucking (1987).The band’s
aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars
achieved by using metal guitar picks notched with sheet metal clips;
the notch causing the pick to hit each string twice, creating the effect of two
simultaneous guitar picks. Equally distinctive was the use of a drum machine
(who they lovingly called Roland) that pre-cursored industrial rock. Big
Black's music challenged convention, pursuing an abrasive sound that was more
aggressive than contemporary punk rock. The band acknowledged no taboos
and Albini’s lyrics openly dealt with loaded topics including murder,
rape, child sexual abuse, and racism. They also held staunch principles,
shunning the mainstream music industry and insisting on complete control over
all aspects of their career. Jughead’s podcast successfully attempts to tell a
portion of the history of the band from the perspective of their Bulldozer EP through
their first full length record Atomizer. (Marking a transition from
a project purely conceived by Steve Albini into a cohesive band with
the added influences from collaborators Santiago Durango and Dave
Riley.)
This episode is co-hosted by Russ Forster and
includes interviews with band members Santiago Durango, Steve Albini,
and Jeff Pezzati, including extra interview material with friend and
fellow songwriter/musician Camilo Gonzalez. Lastly an audio piece written
by journalist/novelist/radio personality Jim DeRogatis.
It’s amazing how well the band’s music holds up thirty plus years later. Steve Albini’s menacing vocals really still are
the gold standard on how to sound sinister without coming off as cheesy. The
band recently received some well-deserved props via a mainstream outlet with Dave
Grohl’s incredible HBO series, Sonic Highways.
While the band have always got their just due in the underground it’s
immeasurable how important the recent conventional exposer has been, equally
important is how Albini’s peer’s speak of the artist/engineer during the
series’ flagship episode as his reputation has not always been one that is warm
and fuzzy. For myself the influence has been great and hearing other’s speak so
highly of his importance, Chicago’s influence and independent music’s influence
on the history of music as a whole literally brought tears to my eyes as both
the tv series and Jughead’s podcast cut through all the bullshit
and rumors and honor one of the greats.

FKA Twigs - "Video Girl"
I’ve made it no secret how much I love FKA Twigs’LP1, in
reality I love all of the artist’s work and LP1, much like her first two EP’s,
will absolutely make my year end list, actually LP1 will top the list. “Video
Girl” is just one of the many highlights from the record and now it has a Kahlil Joseph directed video to boot.
There is a whole lot going on in the clip, which is a
variation of the track as it appears on record. A man is being executed as
Twigs acts as a fly on the wall of sorts in a world that juxtaposes the clean
and sterile with the dark and gritty, something Twigs and her co-producer for
the tune, Paul Epworth, do in their music extremely well. Keep an eye out for Travi$ Scott who makes a cameo.

The Chargeboard
A student designer has built a skateboard that harnesses the
kinetic energy from the motion of the wheels to store power and charge your
device. It's called the Chargeboard,
and its creator, Bjorn van den Hout, who designed the board as a school project
for the Willem de Kooning Academy of art and design in the Netherlands explains,
"The two dynamos
in the in the rear axles generate 6V each, this electricity is then converted
back to a 5V current and gets stored in to a powerbox. So when you'll plug your
iPhone in the dock your phone gets charged and in the meanwhile you can listen
to some of your favourite tracks."
That last part calls to the Chargeboard's third function, an
iPhone boom box. Van den Hout has added an extra component to the underside of
the board, between the two axles, a dock speaker. When you dock your iPhone you
can play music through the speakers.
According to the specifications, one hour of skating will
generate enough energy to charge your phone, and the built-in battery can store
enough power to charge your phone eight times over.
Although it's a graduation project, van den Hout would like to take his Chargeboard further. "Chargeboard is now still a prototype in development," he wrote. "If there is a brand, product developer or anyone else interested in Chargeboard it can hopefully be further developed."
Of course no self-respecting skater would be caught dead
riding a long board as they tend to be viewed as a tool that allows people who
can't skate to sort of hop on the skateboarding culture but in theory this
should be able to work on any type of deck with some modifications.

New Hanksy Work - "Eazy-E Bola"
Posted with the caption "Straight Outta Congo,"(bad
geography Hanksy) a play on the NWA hit
"Straight Outta Compton," Hanksy’s latest work is topical; in fact it’s
THE topic of the moment as newspaper headlines throughout NY had one thing to
say this morning, Ebola has hit NYC. The artwork depicts the late rapper,
in the form of a strain of the Ebola virus, holding two guns next to a bottle
of prescription pills. Hanksy calls the piece "Eazy-E Bola."
The art was pasted on the corner of Division and Canal
Streets in Chinatown.
"Don't get me wrong, Ebola is like hella serious
omg," the artist told ANIMAL. "But American media just loves to
sensationalize things."

Onomatopoeia Exclusive Download: /ˈjedˌīak/ - "Drowning Bird" (Eminem vs. BANKS) & "Falling Horse" Katy Perry vs. BANKS)
Happy Friday! I figured why not share some more exclusives
as we end the work week and approach the freedom of the weekend. I got two new
remix/mashups to gift you, both featuring music from BANKS.
First up is “Drowning
Bird” which pairs up Eminem’s “Mocking Bird” with one of Jillian’s bigger hits,
“Drowning.” The Soundcloud police said
no can do in regards to uploading and sharing of this bad boy but our standby
Mixcloud has absolutely no issues with the untouched BANKS intro and let me proceed.
For those who grabbed our latest edition of the Onomatopoeia Playlist Series earlier
in the week you already got the tune ahead of everyone else as part of that
package so good on you.

Download: Run the Jewels - "RTJ2" (Full LP)
I had a pretty strong feeling Run The Jewels would share
their album ahead of schedule and low and behold late last night EL-P and
Killer Mike did just that! RTJ2 was to see an October 27th release date via Mass Appeal, but in this day
and age why wait, if that shit’s good to go I say let it go, apparently El felt
the same way.
As previously reported RTJ2 features collaborations
with Zack de la Rocha, Travis Barker, Boots, and DianeCoffee on the record which you can download in full HERE.

Exclusive: Onomatopoeia Playlist Series: Vol.5 - "/həˈbiləmənt/"
It’s been about four months since I last shared a new playlist,
it was June, hot, and New Yorker’s were out in full force doing
their seasonal impression of someone who has always loved hiking and mountain
biking before opting to move to a city that's totally inappropriate for either.
But hey, we all like to live out a fantasy
from time to time and what better represents that then Halloween? So in
celebration of all things make believe here is volume 5 in the series, “ /həˈbiləmənt/".
The festive mix includes over three and a half hours of music from the past, present
and future, spanning a wide range of genera’s alongside a healthy dose of
remixes, mashups and exclusives that should help move some asses come the 31st.
I will not be posting any of the track information here or
in the metadata normally attached to the mp3 files. If you would like a copy of
the full track list you can contact us via email and we will gladly send it
your way.

Chvrches – “Get Away”
Zane Lowe and the BBC have teamed up for a project that frankly is kind of weird. Lowe will be “rescoring” Drive by curating artists for new music to go with the film on a BBC Three airing this October 30th at 10 p.m. The project features new music from artist such as BANKS, SBTRKT, The Neighbourhood and Chvrches amongst others.
“Get Away” is the the first new music we have heard from Chvrches in quite some time given the rapid fire nature of how music is distributed and shared now days on the internet. It’s not my favorite song from the band, I find it less appealing than pretty much every track on The Bones Of What You Believe but it’s a good sign that the group is working on new material. Give the song a spin from below..

Banksy Takes On The Girl With The Pearl Earring
More Banksy work to share today, it would seem that the
famous graffiti artist has been pretty active as of late with no less than four
new pieces making their street debut in the last month. Perhaps it's in lieu of the upcoming documentary on HBO?
There was also a false arrest report floating around the web this morning with a mug shot of some cat who not only didn't look anything like Banksy but wasn’t even the right age, it would seem the public’s thirst to learn the true identity of the artist never wanes.

Moving on to the news at hand Banksy takes on Johannes Vermeer’s legendary "Girl with a Pearl Earring," The artist goes for what he does best and utilizes the existing environment, check out some before and after shots from the site.
On a side note if you
haven't watched the documentary "Tim’s Vermeer" make sure you do so, it’s one of
my top films from 2013 and anyone I have recommended it to thus far has been
equally impressed.

Video: LUH. – “Unites”
WU LYF
only lasted for one album but it was a killer one, so while I was bummed when
they broke up a two years ago I was happy to see some of the band continue on
as Los Porcos. Odd man out Ellery James
Roberts put his focus on solo efforts and a now new group that teams him up
with Ebony Hoorn. “Unites” is our first taste of a project called LUH. (Lost
Under Heaven) and includes additional beat sequencing and arrangement by Kult Country’s
Yousif Al-Karaghoul, check out the video below…

Video: Youth Code - "Consuming Guilt"
Grant Singer directs the new video from LA industrial duo
Youth Code and it’s a graphic one at that.
"We wanted to use this video as an opportunity to show
the public the inhumane practices of animal testing," Singer said in a
press release.
To accomplish that, they've cleverly recreated some of the more well-known
acts one would associate with testing on animals and flipped the script.

Listen: Run The Jewels ft. Zach De La Rocha – “Close Your Eyes And Count To Fuck”
Run The Jewels’ second free album RTJ2 is set for
release on October 28th, till now El and Mike have shared two tracks, “BlockbusterNight Part 1” and “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry,” which have both been pretty
great but I’d be lying if I didn't mention
my worry when I saw the guest list for the forthcoming LP. It’s not that I don’t
like the names that were shared, I do, I‘m just not a big fan of guests on hip
hop records, especially when the artist or artists in question already do a
bang up job on their own.
“Close Your Eyes And Count To Fuck,” features former Rage
Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha, not just providing the vocals
for the repeating hook, but also gifting us with a couple of versus. I can
breathe easier as it’s still clear who’s running the show and gives me hope
going forward that RJT2 is going to be just a solid as its predecessor.

Video: The Blood Brothers Live @ Warsaw, Brooklyn October 5 2014 (Full Set)
The Blood Brothers reunited this
year, and made their way to NYC over last weekend where they first played
Central Park's Modern Sky Fest on Saturday and then headlined
a show at
Warsaw on Sunday. The crowed was definitely hyped and full of
fans as the venue erupted when the Seattle band took the stage. From that point it
didn’t let up with continuous, dancing, stage diving and crowd surfing from all
in attendance. This was my sixth time seeing the band, the last being in 2006
or so and they sounded awesome, even more impressive since this was only their
fourth show together since 2007.
Looking in the crowed you could spot Blood Orange's Dev Hynes and
Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, who plays with Jordan Blilie and
Cody Votolato of The Blood Brothers in Head Wound City, all
enjoying the set list made up of songs from the majority of their LP’s.
Set List:

Video: Caribou - "Our Love"
Caribou's new LP, Our Love is officially out today; I have to
believe most fans heard the record when it leaked back in July which makes this
post a bit awkward right? But the truth of the matter is the record is great,
arguably Daniel’s best work to date, and now we can share something that should
be fresh for everyone eyes and ears as a video for the title track has made its way onto the
internet today in conjunction with the release. Directed by Ryan Staake of Pomp & Clout, the
narrative is a look at the seeming limitless of youth with the reality of death
in later years.
Listen: TV On The Radio - "Careful You"
TV On The Radio have shared another new tune from their
forthcoming LP, Seeds. “Careful You” made its way onto the web this morning
with an accompanying lyric video for our enjoyment. No surprises here, more quality work from the Brooklyn crew so if you are a fan of the band’s
sound this should please you, if you aren't maybe today's the day you become
one. Seeds is out via Harvest Records
on November 18th.

Childish Gambino released the first part of his two-part
project STN MTN / KAUAI (STN MTN stands for Stone Mountain, Georgia, where
Donald grew up. Kauai is a Hawaiian island,) an 11-track mixtape
hosted by DJ Drama as part of the Gangsta Grillz series. STN MTN
features production from Nick Banga, Black Party, Kari Faux, Zaytoven, Big Soj,
and his partner in crime Ludwig. Guest emcee’s are sparse with an appearance by
Young Scooter. Grab the tape HERE.
Video: Liars – “I’m Not Gold”
The Liars really have had a great year, their new record
Mess is still one of my favorites with only three more months to go in 2014 so this
is me saying it WILL be on my year end list come December. The accompanying
video’s for Mess’ singles so far have also been super entertaining and different
from anything else that's going on out there and today’s new addition of “I’m
Not Gold” is just another notch in that belt of accomplishments. Angus Andrew’s
hallucinatory anguish is on full display in the video that was directed by LaurieLynch, great stuff to watch, annoying to screen capture!

New Banksy Work Goes Up Only To Be Promptly Removed
Authorities in southern England were embarrassed but
defensive Thursday after telling workers to destroy a mural they later realized
was created by Banksy.
The latest piece, which featured pigeons carrying
anti-immigration banners, appeared at Clacton-on-Sea, the site of a special
election next week featuring the anti-immigration U.K. Independence Party.
Tendring Council spokesman Nigel Brown said that the mural was chemically removed
from the wall after complaints that it was racist.

Video: Cloud Nothings – “Now Hear It”
Just so no one accuses me of dropping our rock coverage in
favor of all the beat driven music, here is a new video from Cloud Nothings.
“Now Hear it,” which may or may not appear on the last Onomatopoeia Playlist Series edition, looks like what would happen if you mashed together old VHS
footage with the Arcade Fire’s current obsession with papier-mâché bobble head
masks. Maybe in the case of the Cloud Nothings, with an extra sprinkle of paranoia
on top. The clip was directed by Carpark labelmate Toro Y Moi’s touring
guitarist Jordan Blackmon and follows Toro Y Moi bassist Patrick Jeffords as he
travels around various scenic California locales.
Listen: Djemba Djemba – “Macking In The Car (I Don't Drive)”
Continuing with the onslaught of new beat-driven music I’ve
been throwing up this week I have another great tune to share with y’all that
should fit in nicely with everything else I’ve been sharing. The name Djemba Djemba might ring a bell to
some of our readers, through his experimenting with polyrhythms, 90’s FM
synths, and the all-important 808 Kick, the young producer has been steadily
releasing solid tunes for the last several years. But don't take my word for
it, whispers on the dance floor say that
he sometimes acts as a ghost writer for Diplo’s releases which even if not true
is a compliment if you ask me. Whatever the case I can relate to the title of Djemba’s
latest tune, “Macking In The Car (I Don't Drive)”, as I don't get behind the
wheel either but more importantly it’s a super fun tune.
Listen: Mr. Carmack – “Drugs”

by the name of Drugs, you can grab the whole thing for one dollar right now
over at his Band Camp, yeah one dollar, it’s a great deal no matter how cheap
you might get when it comes to paying for music. The Hawaii-based producer

Listen: Eyedress ft. GEoRGIA – “When I’m Gone”
Idris Vicuña, better
known as Eyedress shared
the first track from his forthcoming 2015 LP, Astral Traveling Man. “When I’m
Gone” continues down the path explored in his fantastic Hearing Colors mixtape
from earlier in the year, further experimenting and improving on the Chromatics inspired sleazy disco after dark feel. The appropriately distant and dreamy vocals where
provided by London’s GEoRGiA.
