Much like the last time I shared a new playlist six whole months
have gone by so it’s gonna be another long one for y’all with volume 7,
entitled Tout de suite. At this point you probably know the deal, this is ninety
tracks at five and a half hours representing sounds from the past, present and
future along with some remixes and exclusives that span a multitude of genera’s.
I will not be posting any of the track information here or
in the metadata normally attached to the mp3 files. If you would like a copy of
the full track list you can contact us via email and we will gladly send it
your way.
Doomtree released the latest video from their stellar LP,
All Hands this week. If I recall the record came out sometimes around January and
I’m still getting lots of mileage out of it. “Heavy Rescue “ is one of the many
highlights on the record so sit back and enjoy some visuals that were directed
by Stef Alexander, aka P.O.S. and don't be afraid to bob your head.
Experimental electronic producer Arcashared some new music from his forthcoming record titled Mutant earlier this
week. “Soichiro” is a wild ride of glitchy, scattery percussion and twisted
synth sounds juxtaposed in moments of stark, minimal hums and swooshes.
Mutant does not currently have an official release date but
should be out before year’s end.
The Icarus Linecontinue to be a criminally overlooked band, unfortunately I
don’t really see that changing any time soon given the musical climate of the last
5 years or so, but for those who are looking for a good dose of psychedelic
punk rock that adds some Nick Cave and Stooges take note.
"Solar Plexus" is the latest song to be shared
from the bands forthcoming LP, All Things Under Heaven, due October 2nd
via American Primitive and it’s got a video shot by Aric Lorton to boot.
Purchase the limited edition vinyl release from Rough Trade
here and make sure to check the band out live if you get a chance, I’ve seen
them 6 times over the years and its always a good time. Was looking forward to
seeing them this Friday at Saint Vitus but the show was canceled for some
reason.
San Francisco’s Deafheaven are dropping a new LP and follow
up to the largely successful Sunbather next week on October 2nd via Anti-. New Bermuda
falls in line with the Sunbathers sound, ie. The sound of the underground in
1999-2003 or so. That’s by no means a dig, I love the era of punk music which
is why I like Deafheaven and can happily state that I enjoy their latest album as well... But for those of you who missed the last record and have no idea what these
guys sound like think lots of Chaos with bits of ambience mixed in along the
lines of Orchid, Jeromes Dream, Saetia and anything coming out on RoboticEmpire and Hydrahead during their most prolific years.
I am a remix junky, there is nothing that tickles my fancy more
than being able to call out a reference or sample that’s been re-contextualized
and re-packaged for public consumption. Some people truly make an art form out
of it, surpassing the inspiration and flipping it on its head for something altogether
unique and exciting.
Kirby Ferguson celebrates the remix as much as I do and has
made his well-known series “Everything is a Remix” available for the first time
ever as one long play video. Although some
of this content has been around for 5 years now, everything has been given a
polish and new transitions to make it all work even better in celebration of
the series anniversary.
Grab some popcorn and a drink, get comfortable and enjoy the
40 minute clip, it might even surprise some
and change your outlook on what makes something original and why we are attracted
to the things that we are in the first place.
Clearly I’m not posting as much as I used to, simply put I’ve
just become a little more selective. I’m sure now that winter is around the
corner again I’ll be spending more time in front of the computer screen, my
loss will be your gain in theory.
Last week Killer Mike and El-Pshared another
Meow The Jewels tune from the forthcoming remix project due out by the end of
September. Just Blaze take’s on “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry” turning it into “Oh
My Darling Don’t Meow.” It’s another winner for sure but misses some of that brilliant
playfulness that Boots captured when he manned the deck for “Meowrly.” The cat
sounds could be a lot higher in the mix and there could be more of them
but that’s just me nitpicking at the end of the day.
New Yorker’s love to leave the city, it makes them feel special
to reconnect with nature, they even pay top dollar to escape their overpriced apartments
to go do yoga and play farmer for the weekend. They do so in areas that often
resemble the various countries and rural towns around the world they ran away from in
the first place! It’s all very confusing
but the point is Joanna Newsom has shared another new song off her
forthcoming album Divers and it's called "Leaving The City."
Tame Impala shared a video for Currents cut "Let
it Happen". The tune might be my overall favorite on the excellent record
and the video captures the mood of the song quite well, although this is a
radio edit which kind of bums be out since it is such a killer tune. The band
team up with David Wilson to handle directing duties again for this frightening journey
into one man’s mind.
HEALTH have released a video for a radio edit of "Stonefist"
off their new album Death Magic. I already shared the audio stream multiple
times so you know how I feel about the song and band but just in case you
missed it, or still need some convincing, maybe this clip will push you over
the edge. Directed by NAKED FACES, “Stonefist” sees the band undergoing plastic
surgery to both humorous and disastrous effect.
As previously reported Trevor Powers is gearing up to drop
his latest LP, Savage Hills Ballroom on September 25th. Our second
taste of the LP, and first video, comes in the form of “Highway Patrol Stun Gun.”
The song was inspired by the hailstorm of police brutality that’s been on many
peoples mind this last year and the isolation he feels living so far removed
from it. Directed by Kendy Ty.
Joanna Newsom shared the first taste of her forthcoming
LP, Divers today in the form of “Sapokanikan.” The Paul Thomas Andersondirected clip see’s Newsom walking the streets of NYC while singing her tale, day turning to night.
I’ve never really thought of Newsom’s albums as a series of singles, they are
parts of a larger world that has to be experienced in its entirety to get the
complete picture. Thats being said “Sapokanikan” has several movements in itself changing
throughout and steadily building up. The song clocks in at just over 5
minutes but it actually feels longer as there is quite a lot to digest lyrically.
My man Clarence Clarity dropped a new video on us earlier
this morning for NO NOW cut, “Will To Believe.” The clip was directed by Vinyl Williams and like the fantastic song keeps things jittery and jerky. There will be a follow up to the clip that is completely interactive but what that entails exactly and when it will drop are still a mystery to me. NO NOW
continues to be my favorite album of 2015, certainly the most adventurous; so if
glitchy alternative R&B sounds like your thing, or perhaps you just want to hear something different, then make sure to check the album
out in full.
I’ve been praising HEALTH for years and come next week when the LA band releases their new LP, Death Magic, I’m fairly certain many others will finally take notice. Death Magic follows in stride with the direction the band has been moving towards for the better part of the last five years. The collection of songs is infinitely more poppy and the electronics are more prominent then on Get Color. This version of HEALTH probably has most in common with “USA Boys” or “Tears” and for better or worse tones down on the noise elements found on earlier works. I’ve heard the record a whole lot in the last five days and love it but my personal tastes wish a little bit more of the noise was retained or even sustained in the songs that do go down that road and from past recordings. The record is well sequenced with songs, not directly flowing into the next per say, but more so rhythmically or sonically. If you don’t like what you hear in the first four songs then this record isn’t for as it’s a killer lead-in as far as these things go and offers a good blend of poppy HEALTH vs. noisy HEALTH.
Studio engineering comes from the Haxan Cloak, Mars Volta engineer Lars Stalfors, and longtime Kanye West engineer Andrew Dawson which only adds list of things that will make the record more high profile then anything the band has done before. It’s well deserved, the record is great and they are always amazing live so do yourself a favor, if you like what you hear, make sure to catch them next time they are in your town.
On a final note I hope the band continue with their tradition of releasing a remix album for this record as well, they always have really interesting people tinkering with their songs, often to great results and possibly even acting as inspiration or a stepping stone for where the band sonically finds themselves today.
DEATH MAGIC is out August 7th.

Killer Mike finally shared a full track from their Meow The Jewels Project last
night via their Beats Radio 1 show, WRTJ. "Meowrly" is our first
proper taste of the “joke campaign” that became a reality late last year. But the
cat version of "Early", which features Boots, who also helped with
the remix is definitely no joke; in fact I would say the production on this is
even better than the original! Meow The Jewels has no official release date at this point as it was originally scheduled to drop in December of 2014; but if the rest of the record sounds as good as this then it will be well worth the wait.
Some new live remix’s to share this evening, well
technically something new and something old. I originally laid down “The Blank
Beat” back in January of 2014 but sat on it; LL Cool Jdoes his thing over Taylor Swift’s
“Blank Space.” And just earlier tonight I threw Lynyrd Skynryrd together with Ratatat for “Simply Magnifique.” You can stream, share and download from the players below.

Well this is a pleasant surprise right here; Despot, the Queens rapper
and co-owner of NYC venue Santos Party House, dropped a studio single. For
those who follow the elusive emcee “House of Bricks” should be a familiar
live staple but with a solo album that’s long been in the works with little to
no sign having been shared, HoB is a good indication that this thing might
actually see the light of day. E*Vax of Ratatatfame, handles
production duties.
It’s been so long since I we have heard anything from YouthLagoon. Trevor Powers returned to the Internet this week with news of his first
new music since 2013. “The Knower,” starts out simple enough with a somber
barebones approach but then gets quite jittery and closes things off with some
orchestration that would make Beirut proud; good stuff. SavageHills Ballroom is due on September 25th.
A thing of beauty, thanks to my
buddy Anthony for sharing it with me.
"This short 1966 documentary dedicated "to all victims
of intolerance” depicts the dawn of skateboarding in Montreal. A new activity
frowned upon by police and adults, skateboarding gave youngsters a thrilling
sensation of speed and freedom. This film - the first Canadian documentary ever
made about the sport - captures the exuberance of boys and girls having the
time of their lives in free-wheeling downhill locomotion."
Death Grips’ new
video for “Powers That B”
juxtapositions the bands extreme sound with the very mundane act of cleaning a
floor. If that doesn’t excite you, don’t worry you’re not alone, but it falls
in-line with what the band does, bringing home video into the mix and letting
the music tell the story.
Here is something kinda funny, try muting the track and
throwing up some pop music, video ends up looking like a montage in some feel-good
film.
Back in April I mentioned that HEALTH would be releasing a new LP on August 7th titled Death Magic. First single, “New Coke,” pushed forward with the LA noise group’s more dance oriented sound, but that should come as no surprise as they’ve been aggressively going that direction for quite some time now. “Stonefist” follows in those same footsteps with its immediately catchy pulsating rhythms and sharp sterile stabs that really has become something that defines the band’s sound. Whatever the case it’s another awesome tune from the group who I’ll be checking out again this Thursday when they roll into town to preview the new material live.
It’s been a hot minute since I shared anything from The Avalanches; Of course for the most part the collective hasn't actually given us
anything new in well over a decade, but I've
seemingly made it my duty to offer up a handful of treats to our readership
each year to keep the name and interest alive.
What we have here is an ultra-rare short documentary about
The Avalanches and the creation of their classic album Since I Left You and rehearsing
their live sets. The clip was produced for and originally appeared on the
Artzone TV show in 1999 and was written/directed and photographed by Philippe Charluet.
Wow it’s been six months since I last shared a new playlist, it was October, almost Halloween and the long winter was
just about to get started with us. Well It’s late April now and we are starting
to hit those much needed sunny days so it only seemed right I buckle down and finish
this extended edition to make up for the long gap with something to play on those outdoor adventures and road trips.Online Dating is what I’m calling Vol.6 in
the series and its an eclectic eighty-eight song long mix including five
and a half hours of music from the past, present and future, spanning a wide
range of genera’s that's sure to have a little something for every internet personality.
I will not be posting any of the track information here or
in the metadata normally attached to the mp3 files. If you would like a copy of
the full track list you can contact us via email and we will gladly send it
your way.
The new Clarence Clarity LP, No Now is without a doubt one
of my favorite records from the last couple of years; I've already made push to
get it heard by more people, and I hope my efforts thus far have worked on a handful
of you at least. "Buck Toothed
Particle Smashers," is the latest memorable tune from the record to get
the video treatment; in the clip a collage of VHS projections act as the
breeding ground to a series of figures who jerk and jolt to the glitchy rhythms
provided by the singer/producer.
Fuck yeah! I love me some HEALTH and the L.A. band have finally announced Death Magic, their first studio album since 2009's Get Color. The record will be released on August 7 via Loma Vista and with the announcement comes a new song and video for "New Coke.” As with most things HEALTH the experience can be a tense one, the clip was directed by the bands own John Famiglietti and the song checks off all those boxes that make HEALTH one of my favorite bands, ghostly vocals, interesting rhythms, thoughtful breakdowns and more.
San Fermin returns to the scene tomorrow with a new LP by
the name of Jackrabbit. I was a big fan of Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s last offering a
couple years back, the record actually made my year-end list and Jackrabbit
continues down the same chamber-pop path laid out in 2013. Ellis is still the
acting writer/composer for all the material but the eight-member group will be
joining for the tour that kicks off this Thursday. The title track is definitely a
highlight on the record that I’ve played to death in the last couple weeks and
should please those who fell in love with previous offering like “Sonsick.” In
the video that was released today vocalist Charlene Kaye runs through the hillsides with two K9’s in hot pursuit.
I’ve been sitting on this bad boy for a hot minute now
waiting for today to hit; wouldn’t you know I got so busy with work I almost
forgot to do the post all together which would have really bummed me out all
things considered.
So it’s Tax Day, most folks hate it, I love it because it’s
cash in my pocket but regardless of what side of the line you fall on this live remix of Danny Brown’s “Lie4” with Hucci’s “Sheild” is up for streaming and
free to download, I hope y’all enjoy it and get some smiles when filing that
paper work!

Former Das Racist emcee, Heems, teamed up with Adult Swim
for a video for Eat Pray Thug track “Sometimes.” The satirical video features Eric Andre, Hannibal Buress and fellow Das Racist member Dapwell
in the setting of an infomercial aimed towards products that can change your
skin color and improve your life.
Brooklyn’s Liturgy dropped
a video for “Quetzalcoatl” off their recently released Thrill Jockey effort, The
Ark Work. The visuals are super trippy and have an epic nature to theme even
though there is no traditional narrative happening, it’s pretty hypnotic and
fits the bands sound and overall esthetic very well.
Death Grips have just shared the video for "I
Break Mirrors With My Face in the United States", from their upcoming
album Jenny Death, which coincidentally is fantastic for those who haven't heard
it in one form or another yet. Like much of the groups output the video and
song are seemingly an exercise in how to be intense!
Run the Jewels have released the video for "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)", their Run the Jewels 2 track featuring Rage Against the Machine's Zack De LaRocha. The clip was directed by A.G. Rojas and is topical given the current social political climate here in the U.S.
UK based producer Clarence Clarity (named after the popular meme) recently dropped his debut LP, No Now, via Bella Union. The reception has been pretty much nonexistent thus far which is surprising to me because the record is a brave and impressive hour plus journey into a distinctively dense and cacophonous re-imagining of pop and R&B music.
You may be thinking to yourself oh this is another ethereal bedroom R&B producer who’s married traditionally commercial themes with dramatic, sleek, minimal, dark, undertones to satisfy those who prefer their smoothness to mirror Autre Ne Veut over something like Jodeci? Well I’m here to tell you that while Clarence clearly knows what the Autre Ne Veut and How To Dress Well’s of the universe are doing with their takes on the genre, this is not that, this is maximalist, disjointed and glitchy, this is taking that idea of mixing 70% of that traditional R&B flavor with 30% experimenting and reversing the percentages so that the experimentation is now at 70%. No Now probably shares more in common sonically with the Animal Collectiveand is very much here and now, it completely encapsulates the all consuming nature of the Internet and the overwhelming beauty and ugliness it can sometimes create in today's society.
The unique take isn’t the result of production alone; Clarence’s eccentric vocal delivery will catch some off-guard and like last year’s FKA Twigs record, must have been extremely difficult to even pull off in these nontraditional musical environments. But somehow it all works and it all works extremely well in my opinion, providing the listener with one of the most original records I’ve heard in recent memory that could function on both a dance-floor and at home.
I hope people get to hear the record, it dropped earlier in the month and I haven’t really heard or seen much about it, which is why I’m even sharing a post that is closer to a record review than a heads up to readership that I usually would provide at this point. Get a taste of No Now from the five track sampler below and if you like what you hear pick up a digital copy from the usual places or a special edition physical copy from Rough Trade that also includes the instrumentals.
Italian noise act Zu are gearing up to drop their fifth
record via Ipecac Recordings on March 24th. Corta Tordo was recorded
in Bologna, Italy and for those not acquainted with the bands sound it’s a
combination of atmospheric, heavy, sludgy moments (Think Melvins) and super
chaotic outbursts (Think The Locust). While I wouldn’t compare them in sound,
people who found themselves enjoying the last Deafheaven record unexpectedly
might have a similar experience with Tordo, as there are some hypnotic moments wrapped up in otherwise abrasive compositions. Give the record
a spin below…
Death Grips shared “On GP,” their newest song from
their upcoming LP Jenny Death. The track was shared with a video of a man doing
random weird activities, it’s a different sound for the trio and reminds me a
little more of Zach’s work with Hella. Look for Jenny Death to drop at the end
of the month.
As the title above states “Here Is A Gift For You” is
a 42-minute documentary on metal super-group, Old Man Gloom (Cave In, Converge and ex-Isis).
Kenneth Thomas put together the feature which chronicles the band up to the
making of their 2014 album, “The Ape Of God.” The film is a great mix of interviews from various musicians, family remembers and scenesters that often retain a very dry and sarcastic sense of humor. A must for fans of any of the bands these guys are involved with or if you consider yourself a fan of gloomy psychedelic metal.
Yes I’m still here, just getting a little choosier about
what I post these days…
Shlohmo’s new album Dark Red is scheduled to
drop on April 7 via True Panther/WeDidIt and with that date swiftly
approaching, Shlohmo has returned with his next video and single. Jack Irving directs
the video for “Beams” which matches the fast paced drum & bass roots the single
lives in.
Earlier today, Banksy shared some photos and a video of what
he’s currently getting up to. Apparently the artist is in Gaza at the moment as
seen in the aforementioned clip titled "Make this the year YOU discover a new
destination." The video is a tongue and cheek nod to the tourism industry via
travel commercial and sees Banksy entering an “illegal tunnel” and emerging in
Gaza. Several new pieces are put up
among the urban decay including the one above which is a play on Niobe, the
Greek goddess that was punished for pride in her children. The project seems
to be a commentary on Israel’s Operation Protective Edge and the subsequent
hardships suffered by Palestinians, check it out below…
Late in 2014 super group Old Man Gloom released their latest record, Ape of God, to much acclaim in the “metal underground.” Now in 2015 we get a video for lead “single” "The Lash." The clip was directed by Andrew Cox who of course also makes music under the names Axed Crown and Andraus.
