Video: KAWS redesigns MTV's Moonman

Kaws recently shared some footage of his redesigned MTV Moonman for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards which will be held in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center come August 25h.  This is the first time the silver spaceman has been altered in its 30 years but doesn't mark a permanent change as there is no plan to make the face-lift the standard for the next 30 years.

"That's what I liked about the project; I wouldn¹t want to redesign it for history, I like the idea that at this moment, this first time in Brooklyn, the Moonman's going to change," he said. "I like the fact that, 40 or 60 artists will win this piece, and the majority won't know anything about my work. [And] I'm sure you'll have artists that are mad; they have their perfect chrome line of Moonmen and I've somehow ruined that symmetry ... I love that idea."

Listen: Danny Brown: "#HottestMC"

Danny Brown has recorded a new one-off track in response to the much talked about MTV's annual "Hottest MC" countdown. Of course anyone who takes a list of hottest mc’s (what does that even mean?) compiled by MTV too seriously should probably not even be on this site as it pretty much means fuck all but hey that doesn't mean some of the MC’s listed aren't talented.  "Fuck a top 10 list ... nigga im the Greatest Rapper Ever," Danny wrote on Twitter.

MTV reveals its top 5 tomorrow, will Danny make the cut?  Listen to the Harry Fraud-produced song which sees the rapper doing his thing in a slightly more laid back, or perhaps less animated, manner then we are used to hearing from him but as always with much humor.

Video: Death Grips – “I’ve Seen Footage” Interactive Version

Death Grips are a perfect example that if you do things your own way without regard to the mainstream or with what other people are doing the results can be downright exceptional. The band recently teamed up with MTV to make one of the most interactive pieces of film I’ve ever experienced. Filmed with over 50 cameras simultaneously, at a party, you can click from person to person to get different perspectives while listening to their tune “I’ve Seen Footage”, almost like an audiovisual chose your own adventure book. There are even some tasks you can complete during the video, as well as hidden cameras that can found throughout. Do yourself a favor and spend some time with it HERE now!

Video: The Black Keys - "Gold on the Ceiling" (directed by Harmony Korine)

A while back director Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy ,etc..) shot some footage of the Black Keys which was to be used for a TBD music video, eventually "Gold on the Ceiling".  In the mean time, the band released their own video for "Gold on the Ceiling" consisting of live and behind-the-scene tour footage.  Weird images started popping up from the video shoot of the boys as babies being carried around by giant dopplegangers (supposedly to 2 very tall local Belmont basketball players) and eventually the Korine video was released.  It is kind of an official "unofficial" video.  According to a recent MTV interview,.. the boys said the following:

"We did a video with Harmony, but it's not really for 'Gold on the Ceiling,'" frontman Dan Auerbach said.  "Well, it is, sort of," drummer Patrick Carney added.  "It's for whatever music we want to put to it. Pretty much we just let Harmony get self-indulgent, do his thing," Auerbach continued.

It kind of shows as the video lags and dwells in its own oddness and obviously wasn't made for this music.  I've been lost on Korine's last couple projects as it seems he is getting wrapped up in his own obsession with trailer park oddness and has been beating that subject to death.  Keep an eye out for the cameo appearance by the ATL Twins at the end, who will appear in Korine's next film, Spring Breakers.

Video: Beavis and Butt-Head Re-launch

Mike Judge’s "Beavis and Butt-head" retuned to TV on Thursday night after a 14 year absence. The episode, "Werewolves of Highland" was the first new episode since the show stopped airing in 1997 and finds the boys right where we left them, sitting on the couch offering their commentary on tv. Last night's episode, for instance, finds Beavis and Butt-head watching MGMT's "Kids" video and commenting on a Skrillex clip. They also watch one of the Twilight films, then decide to become vampires and werewolves to get girls.

New work From James (Dalek) Marshall

The Unfolding Heart, 2011. Acrylic on wood. 72 x 72"
A new piece by former graffiti/current contemporary artist James Marshall, aka Dalek popped up at MTV’s Redefine auction. The piece entitled “The Unfolding Heart” is perhaps the biggest departure from James’s already phased out iconic Space Monkey imagery. What makes this piece even more unique is the simple pink color palette and toned down chaos in the form of his geometric pattern work, exciting stuff, I’m curious to see where he takes it.
