Video: TateShots - Maurice Sendak

Maurice Bernard Sendak is an American writer and illustrator best known for his book Where the Wild Things Are. In the compelling interview below for TateShorts Maurice discuses his life’s work, influences, the impact of Where The Wild Things Are, his obsession with William Blake and his views on selling out, seems like a real interesting character with strong convictions.

Video: The Boombox Project

I wish I could say that growing up in the 80's boomboxes were all the rage in my hood' but I wasn't that cool nor was my neighborhood and my closest interaction to one was playing with a sweet Transformer named Soundwave.  Upon seeing one first hand I understood peoples obsession with them.  Most were not really that great as far as sound quality goes but they just looked cool. Photographer and boombox collector, Lyle Owerko, created a set of portraits entitled The Boombox Project which showcase 42 different rustic looking "ghetto blasters"..

These portraits were shown at a gallery show at the Clic Gallery in NYC and released in a book entitled The Boombox Project which features the portraits as well as a number of stylized old school shots of boomboxes in their natural environment. Be sure to check out the portraits on Owerko's website.

NPR interviewed Owerko for a piece on the history of boomboxes you can check out below....

Video: DKNG Phish New Years poster process

You don't have to be a fan of the band to appreciate a good poster.  DKNG has been pumping out amazing prints for a while now and even better has started filming the creation process.  The latest installment is for the New Year's MSG show print for Phish.

The 700 print run (18' x 24') is apparently already sold out but there will be a "green" variant print.

Throwback Thursdays: Rock Under The Red Flag- "Birthday Boyz"

For the Final Throwback Thursday of 2011 I went with a real gem… In 2007 Vice tagged along with Brooklyn's Birthday Boyz, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix’s excellent hardcore band that preceded Liturgy, on an unprecedented tour into the hinterlands of China's underground rock scene, the result is this 30 minute documentary.

While Bjork and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs graced government-sanctioned summer stages, a small film crew followed the Boyz as they played shows and hung out with local Chinese bands in the shadier venues of Beijing, Shanghai and down the Yangtze to the bustling rock communities of the lesser-known south. The band expected debauchery, train chaos, and plenty of baijiu (Chinese moonshine) but were surprised to come upon a relatively diverse and bourgeoning music scene. Oh yeah, the best part?  The tour wasn't legal; in fact, restrictions were recently put in place to prevent foreign bands from even entering China.

Bid On This: Kevin Eastman’s Studio Content Auction

This is somewhat random and fun…Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is auctioning off his studio inside of Meltdown Comics.  In the video below, Kevin shows us a glimpse of some of the treasures that are featured in this one-of-a-kind auction. His studio looks like every high school/college guy’s room growing up, like a pop culture bomb exploded in the space but I bet there are a whole lot of gems hiding in there!
For all the details, visit
The Auction is currently up to $5,450.00 and ends on January 4th 2012

Watch: jj - "VI"

One of our favorite Swedish duos (there's so many...) with a tradition of generosity around Christmas time, deliver yet another yule tide goody in the form of this rather spooky video that puts most witch-house outfits to shame.  Of course, the whole thing turns into a spectacular party mid-way through so don't consider this a turn in creative direction.  Watch below:

Listen: The xx - "Open Eyes" (Demo)

Merry xxmas (too easy...sorry).  The xx finally offer up some new material in the form of a demo they did while recording their new album.  The name of the track is "Open Eyes" and it's a mouth watering look at what we can expect from the trio.  Listen to it below or download it here

Video: 20 years of Erik Brunetti & FUCT

Hype Beast (HBTV) caught up with brand FUCT-creator, Erik Brunetti recently in LA to talk about the company's 20+ years of culturally provocative design work.  FUCT began in 1990 and helped push the aesthetic of graffiti, skate & street wear along with the likes of Stussy & Hysteric Glamour and has dipped their finger in skate deck design, clothing, and video.  Basically anything you can stick a "FUCT" logo. Brunetti was interviewed while pushing his retrospective show at Union LA.

Happy Holidays all.  The posts have been coming in slower here as we enjoy ourselves by lounging & getting fat.  Not sure what religion or holiday you follow but us here at Onomatopoeia give you a virtual Holiday High-Five.  Enjoy your time off from whatever you do.

I thought these 2 videos would help share in the cheer of the season.

Show Opening: David Ellis - “True Value” @ Joshua Liner Gallery NYC

With his unique blend of humor and technical invention, Brooklyn based artist David Ellis’s latest show “True Value” explores the artists love for music in a variety of art genres and media, including painting, sculpture, and video installation.

Animal” captures the creation of large mural works in time-lapse digital video documenting the growth of marks and strokes of pigment on walls, floors, and other surfaces creating a magical balance of sound and image changing and evolving steadily throughout.

On the other side of the gallery there is a beautiful series of paintings on panel and tobacco-stained paper. Preparing the paper himself, the artist used the natural material for pigment as it resonated with his upbringing in Cameron, North Carolina, an area dense with tobacco fields.

In the main area a series of mixed media paintings done on wood panels showcase the artist’s signature motion swirls along side several “number” paintings, one of which has a secret collaboration as the reverse side of the panel is a KR drip painting also signed and dated. Ellis also creates a series of sculptural works including a large installation created in collaboration with Roberto Lange, built of discarded paint cans and buckets that beat a syncopated rhythm, the piece won the acclaimed PULSE Prize at this years PULSE New York Art Fair.

Another series of sculptures see Ellis using album covers mounted in dense stacks on wood, the covers are “recollected” by the artist into gradient color schemes or according to other criteria. Outside of looking quite striking they also offer that added excitement of recognizing albums you might have in your own vinyl collection.

If you are in NYC make sure to pass by the Joshua Liner Gallery to see this show as Ellis’s work is truly original, True Value runs until January 14, 2012.

Download: The Weeknd - Echoes of Silence

Christmas came early for fans of The Weeknd with yet another free "mixtape", or as I like to call them..."albums".  One wonders when our favorite (post?) R&B/Hip-Hop act of this year will get an official release, yet we're guessing they're consciously stalling and choosing their own release schedule and strategies.  Not to mention that free or not free, signed or unsigned The Weeknd's music is special.  We should note that track 7 is produced by another favorite of ours: Clams Casino (whose instrumental mixtape is a 2011 highlight and you should also download for free here, if you haven't already)  Download the new The Weeknd mixtape "Echoes of Silence" here or through their site. In case you were wondering, we're still loving the crew.

Video: Here Comes The Neighborhood VOL 1.7 “Martha Cooper”

Chapter 7 of the stellar web documentary series Here Comes The Neighborhood  focus’s on legendary photographer Martha Cooper. Cooper has been documenting graffiti and graffiti writers since the late 1970s. She has remained a fixture in the community and culture, and has been documenting the Wynwood Walls since the project began in 2009. Her photos tell the story of the Wynwood Walls from its inception to expansion, and all of the artists and their respective works. In graffiti and street art, nothing is permanent, even commissioned walls. Because of the temporary nature of the medium, Martha’s photos outlast almost every piece of graffiti or street art itself.

Drink this: Stars Wars x Evian

If you need a last minute Christmas gift idea for a Star Wars fan, these are the droids you're looking for.  Evian and the Star Wars franchise combine forces to create light saber shaped, character illustrated bottles of water (force not included).  Should be the perfect thirst quencher during those long hours said Star Wars fan will probably be spending this Holiday Season on the Star Wars "The Old Republic" MMO.

Video: Thomas Campbell prepping for NYC show

Santa Cruz-based artist Thomas Campbell opened a show at The Half Gallery in New York City about 2 weeks ago, which was his first showing about in NYC in about 10 years.  While prepping for the show he stayed at the trendy Standard Hotel in the East Village and put some finishing touches on his pieces.

To commemorate the show and his stay, The Standard released a little behind-the-scenes video discussing some of Campbell's thought process and inspiration.

His show entitled "Capture and Release" will be be showing at The Half Gallery until Jan. 30, 2012.

Video: Michel Gondry's "Taxi Driver" remake

Looks like filmmaker Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, etc..) has taken a page out of his movie Be Kind Rewind and make a sweded movie of his own, in this case Taxi Driver.  Don't feel bad,.. I initially had to look up what "sweding" a film was too.  It is essentially creatively recreating big budget movies w/ a camcorder and a lot of free time.  In typical Gondry fashion he brings child like innovation (like colored pencils for bullets & neon paint for blood) to otherwise mature and in this case gruesome subject matter.

Hopefully this is the start of many sweded film remakes to come for Gondry.

Sunday Matinée - Celebrating Sunday's with a live clip - Rocket From The Crypt

Oh Rocket From The Crypt you truly were one of the greatest rock and roll bands off all time, any one who ever had the pleasure of seeing the band live knows it was always a euphoric experience so it was only right that I finally posted something from the boys for our Sunday Matinée.

Here’s the band playing their most widely recognized song “On A Rope” at Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. sounding like the well oiled machine they consistently were.

Video: Arcade Fire - "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

The Arcade Fire released a new video for "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" from their 2010 album, The Suburbs. Why would they bother making a video for a song that is 2 years old you might ask? Well,... this video is special as it is a part of an interactive project put together by director Vincent Morisset.

A Sprawl II website was created in which users are supposed to interact and record snippets of themselves dancing and singing via webcam and it somehow splices with the video. I don't have a webcam so I could test it out myself so the website was a bit jarbbled to me but I am interested to see the desired effect.

Video: Mouse Frosted Chocolate - (NSFW)

Italian animator Donate Sansone(aka. Milkyeyes)has released a new short experimental animation entitled Topo Glassato Al Cioccolato (Mouse Frosted Chocolate). I wouldn't even know where to begin to try and describe it. The style is really rough and sketchy like a Derek Hess drawing.

Be sure to check out his other work on his Vimeo page, including the crazy Videogioco.

Listen: Sleigh Bells – “Born to Lose”

Several weeks back we told you of Sleigh Bells return with their highly anticipated  forthcoming sophomore LP, out on February 14th 2012, entitled Reign of Terror, now we can share the bands first bombastic single form the LP, "Born to Lose" below...

Throwback Thursdays: Unkle - "Ape Shall Never Kill Ape"

I thought for this Throwback Thursday I would bring back a classic piece of wax from 1997, Unkle - "Ape Shall Never Kill Ape" (Toys Factory Records) featuring Nigo & the Scratch Perverts.  As you might be able to pull from its name, this track is chalk full of samples from the Planet of the Apes film series.

Nigo (Tomoaki Nagao) eventually re-released this song on his debut album "Ape Sounds" (MoWax Records) 3 years later and called it "March of the General".  He technically only really produced this album (leaving musical duties to people like James Lavelle, Ben Lee, Money Mark, etc) and acted as art director but has continued to use the ape motif eventually creating his own music label (Ape Sounds) and through out his clothing line, BAPE which is singlehandedly responsible for making hip-hop kids look like fluorescent Anime characters.

BONUS: Nigo - "Kung Fu Fightin"

Listen: Feist - "How Come You Never Go There" Beck Remix

Feist’s  "How Come You Never Go There"  from her 2011 LP Metals was recently remixed by Beck, a partnership that fits like a glove, check the results below…

Video: Vegan Black Metal Chef Episode 6 "Holliday Hell Roast"

Vegan Black Metal Chef has cooked up another dark spell, this time in the form of a holiday hell roast made from a truly evil source of protein, Tofurky. The dark lord of the kitchen had this to say on his spell…
“Before you give me any shit about Tofurkey, know this. Their original product "the roast" is fucking amazing (especially with the gravy you will learn to make in this video). All of Tofurkey's other products just give the roast a bad name in my opinion. Do not judge the roast on the slices - they are different, or the hot dog/sausage like things - they are all different and kinda tasteless to me."

Video: Lana Del Rey – “Born To Die”

The finalized video for Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die” dropped yesterday; the idea was conceived by Lana and directed by Woodkid, who’s excellent visual style you may remember from a post we did way back in June.

Shepard Fairey - Time Magazine Cover "Person of The Year"

Time's Person of the Year issue is upon us and the honor goes to "The Protestor" Cover by Shepard Fairey. Other finalists this year included Kate Middleton, Paul Ryan, Admiral William McRaven, Ai Weiwei and Gabby Giffords, who were all featured in the issue as well.

Listen: Youth Lagoon Cover John Denver's "Goodbye Again" Live on SiriusXMU

Youth Lagoon’s take on John Denver’s “Goodbye Again” manages to sound like the classic was tailor written for Trevor Power’s lo-fi group to cover. The song, which was performed on Sirius XM, is a stripped-down version that focuses on the singer’s gentle voice backed by the trademark bedroom pop sounds. Give it a listen below.

Listen: AraabMUZIK – “I Remember”

Earlier this year, Providence MPC wizard AraabMUZIK released his solo album Electronic Dream, Today, roughly six months later he releases a deluxe edition of that album. The deluxe edition features six new tracks, and we’ve got one of them below. Listen to “I Remember,” Araab’s reworking of very well known club anthem from Deadmau5/Kaskade  of the same name.

Video: "Gary"

"Gary" is a nice little 7-min short animation about a little boy lusting after older women as we all did. He doodles an older version of himself which comes to life and to his chagrin starts canoodling with the very girl Gary had his eyes on. The animation is an interesting mix of 2D & 3D and utilizes a lot of interesting techniques. It's a short watch you can check out when your boss isn't looking.

Video: Herman Dune - "Tell Me Something I Don't Know"

Hmmm.... chalk this one up to random video cameo. French duo Herman Dune released a video for track "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" from his 2011 album Strange Moosic which features an adorable blue forest yeti &... John Hamm. Weird and awesome.

Herman Dune is an interesting musician. He makes catchy songs that are a bit too repetitive and slightly annoying but good-hearted and make you feel like things aren't so bad. Plus he definitely makes some entertaining videos.
