David Choe was on Howard Stern this morning to discuss his recent journey into mega wealth due to Facebook stock. It’s a very long interview so it’s been split up into six parts with topics ranging from his time in prison, to gambling, to the film The Social Network and masturbation. David himself could care less about social networking but being a big gambler went with the stock options at a time when Facebook was worth zip. With Mark Zuckerberg moving into the new Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California, there was a need some interior decorating. As many know David Choe had painted up the original offices back in 2006 (apparently Choe was paid in stock which now might be worth up to 200 mil.), so it was only natural for Zuckerberg to invite the man back to put his signature touch on the inside the new building. The media giant apparently has a taste for Choe’s paintings as he has several in his personal collection. What happens to you when you die? Do you rot in the ground or ascend to heaven? More importantly what kind of legacy do you leave behind? How is your memory perceived? Well life doesn't have to end at death according to Envoy. A new system that keeps your digital consciousness alive and interactive via Facebook, Twitter, etc. based off of previous communication patterns before you died. Or at least the web thought for a couple weeks.
Envoy is the brainchild of Bay Area designer, Max Batt and had people questioning if it was some kind of viral promo for a sci-fi movie or scarier yet, something real. Something Facebook was actually employing. It turns out, it was a senior thesis project... a very convincing one at that in that it got people thinking about what happens to all the digital data one accumulates in their lifetime and what becomes of it once they pass. The concept of "social mourning" is quickly becoming a reality.
