Fucked Up frontman Damian Abraham recently started a podcast
series called Turned Out A Punk, in the podcast he interviews people about their backgrounds in
punk rock. On this week’s episode he chats with Perfect Pussy leader Meredith
Graves where they discuss a multitude of social subjects including the singer's formative years, the misogyny,
sexism, homophobia and racism that exists in the music scene today.
It’s not all super serious though as the two also delve into some music geek
type stuff and lighthearted fashion talk in the hour and a half chat. So grab a
comfy chair and something to drink, kickback and enjoy the show.
Jonathan Lethem, the Roy E. Disney Professor of Creative
Writing at Pomona College, is the critically acclaimed author of
"Motherless Brooklyn," "The Fortress of Solitude,"
"Chronic City," and "Dissident Gardens". Back in 2013 he collaborated with Raymond Pettibon on
a monographic survey of the artist's work, which embraces a spectrum of
American "high" and "low" culture, from the deviations of
marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics, and
sexuality.
Raymond, who is most well-known for his iconic punk rock graphics, is as relevant as ever, although not the best speaker. In fact as of late his work has been licensed
to NYC trend setters Supreme. The conversation starts out a little awkward but
as things move along Raymond becomes more comfortable and opens up more about
his process, collaborations, comics, film making and more.

A Tribe Called Quest helped create a new wave of hip-hop in
the 90's with their innovative sound, style and message. Q-Tip's production in
particular has helped shape hip-hop right through to today, with artists likeKanye and Pharrell citing him as one of their biggest influences. Benji speaks
at length with Tip about his musical upbringing in Queens in the 70's,
releasing a debut LP as a teenager, his reluctance to fame and the part he
played in introducing the late J Dilla to the world.
There is also an exclusive Tribe announcement and Tip gives
more details about his forthcoming LP - The Last Zulu, which he describes as
'The Evil twin to Tribe'.
In the latest episode of Adult Swim’s Think TalkBanksytalks about a wide
range of topics including the importance of breakfast, boy bands, graffiti and
KAWS. I’m not quite sure how serious he’s being about everything in the
three-minute interview but it seems to be in good fun and any footage of the legendary Brit is always exciting.
This week’s guest on Flab Magazine’s podcast series was is multi-media
artist/singer/entrepreneur/art director and all around inspiring guy Sonny Kay,
who is perhaps best known for starting indie label, Gold Standard Laboratories.
Before closing it’s doors in 2007 the label was home of some of the most genre
bending punk rock acts of my time including a number of bands that Sonny was a
member of like Angel Hair, the VSS, Year Future, Savalas, Subpoena the Past and
more. Sonny’s time now days is spent working on some of the best photo collage art works gracing LP covers today.

In the hour and forty minute discussion Sonny talks about
his career as a lover and performer of punk rock, a trip down memory lane on life
in Boulder, Colorado circa the 90s, the rise of ‘mainstream punk rock” as compared
to the rawer sound of GSL, his relationship with Omar from the Mars Volta, the transition from music to visual arts and much more.
Barry McGeediscusses a range of topics with some teenagers
around a campfire. Some of the questions posed by the audience include urban
vs. rural inspiration, how he got into graffiti, gallery vs. street work, the
reason behind his many alias’s and many more. Barry himself goes on to pose some questions
to the kids and how they view art today in this video created in conjunction with
the Teen Art Council and Boston’s ICA, which is of course showing Barry’s
mid-career survey at the moment.
Mo’ Wax, was a huge influence when I was growing up and attending high school, the leftfield hip-hop label that brought you artists like DJ Shadow, and originally introduced "those in the know" to fashion brands like A Bathing Ape turns 21 this
year.
To mark the occasion, the label are planning an exhibition
titled Urban Archaeology - which will then be turned into a book
documenting the Mo’ Wax discography and story (a little more on that and the
forthcoming Kickstarter campaign behind it, here). James Lavelle, who co-founded the label in 1992 and
would later form UNKLE with Shadow, has an incredible – bordering on mythical,
for fans of the label – lock-up used to store his personal collection of
records, Mo’ Wax memorabilia and more, and FACT TV, along with DJ Haus of
Unknown to the Unknown and various other ventures, went down to check it out.
So far two episodes have aired and as you’d expect, Lavelle
has stories for days. In part one James
shares some stories about personal favs in his collection, his days working at
West London record store Honest Jon’s, visual collaborations with Will Bankhead
and Massive Attack’s 3D and more.
In part two we see James dig through some of the older and rarer material in his collection – DAT tapes and all – and talks about the major influences on the label over the years.

artists David Salle, known best for helping define postmodern sensibility, and
street artist-turned-sculptor and limited edition toy & clothing designer,

career stages, motivations, inspirations, philosophies, first work sold, favorite pieces, venture capitalists as investors in art, legal woes and much more.
As previously reported artist Brian Donnelly, better known
as KAWS will join the balloon line-up of the 2012 Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade. ARTINFO visited KAWS in his
Brooklyn studio and talked about his preparation for the parade.

Ian MacKaye, co-founder of Dischord Recordsand vocal proponent
of all ages shows, visited The VERA Project for a special question and answer
session on September 7th where he discusses such things as what punk
means to him, file sharing, the straight edge movement, marriage equality, and
more.
The VERA Project aims to be a place for youth and people
supportive of an all-ages atmosphere to create social change, strong community
ties, and education opportunities through music and visual arts, placing
importance on a non-hierarchical internal structure and "participatory culture."
