54 Album Cover Parodies

Ahh LP art, is there anything more glorious and relatable when you are a music fan, from the t-shirts that reproduce those iconic covers and are worn by fans of all ages to the posters hanging in record stores and bedroom walls, LP art is often as iconic as the band and music it represents. Some of the more recognizable graphics have been paid tribute to or spoofed many times over, especially when talking about a band like the Beatles. Some are a little harder to recognize as their spotlight has faded into obscurity but you can bet the record collector usually knows what’s being referenced and today we pay tribute to a handful that have made us smile over the years from a multitude of genera’s and artists. More importantly perhaps is the reminder that while the mp3 maybe convenient, a full package and physical item has its own merits and that memorable cover art is sadly being lost as a result.

Video: Robert Crumb - "The Complete Record Cover Collection"

This is a pretty great video focusing on Robert Crumb’s record cover art. Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her album Cheap Thrills. It was the only “in” the artist  needed, especially since he had been fascinated with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country, and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a teen. This early collaboration proved very successful and Crumb went on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb's artistic interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s.  Check out the video below and make sure to pick up “R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection”, a must-have for any lover of graphics, music or Crumb's unique and perverted sense of humor.

Video: Ben Venom’s Heavy Metal Quilts

If you were a metal-head ever you probably have a collection of concert t-shirts stashed away in some closet, you know that prized Napalm Death shirt that the parents use to try and get rid of at every opportunity.
Well San Francisco based artist Ben Venom has come up with an unusual use for those old cotton gems — he sews them into quilts.
Venom (a.k.a. Ben Baumgartner) say’s that he was inspired by a 2006 quilt show at San Francisco's de Young Museum, featuring works from rural Alabama. "I was completely blown away by the architecture of the quilts, the handmade nature of them, and probably [for] over 130 years they've been making these quilts," he says.
Venom says his concert T's were logical materials because "they've been lying around my closet for years. Like my Testament shirt was completely threadbare; you could see my nipples through it," he says, "It's not very heavy metal to wear that out in public."
"I'm interested in juxtaposing traditional handmade crafts with one of the more extreme musical genres, Heavy Metal. My work can be described as a collision of Iron Maiden Metal ballads with the outrageous stage antics of Ozzy Osbourne. Serious, yet attempting to take on a B movie Horror film style where even the beasts of Metal need a warm blanket to sleep with. The question remains… Can I play with madness?"
You can check out some of Ben’s devilish duvet’s at Use Me, curated by Yuri Psinakis which opens at the Scion Space this Saturday, October 15th.

Blu Mural Athens, Greece

Photos via the artist.
Blu has landed in Greece to give his special commentary on the economic crisis happening there as the country I call home heads towards an inevitable default. Blue seems to be hitting a wide range of European cities on his road trip as he has made his way to and from countries and cities like Italy, Bologna, Palestra, Jesi, Krakow, Poznań, Fabriano, Cologne, Grottaglie, Valencia, and Spain. Happy to see Greece made the cut, sad for the reasons.

KAWS Painting Stolen From Marc Ecko Gallery

Standing calmly in a gallery lift this man looks like any other art lover, only the souvenir he has under his arm is a stolen $100,000 painting.
The thief removed artwork 'Untitled (Calvin Klein)' from a wall on the second floor of the Marc Ecko art gallery, New York at 6pm last night.
Surveillance cameras captured the man as he pilfered a classic ad disruption piece by Brooklyn-based artist KAWS which features acrylic over an ad poster for Calvin Klein jeans.
He then simply rolled up the artwork, put it into a tube and walked out of the building
A police spokesman said: 'The thief is around 5ft 11in and was wearing a dark green hoodie, blue jeans, a tan baseball hat, sunglasses and running shoes.'

Flights of Genius by Stephen Powers

Tonight I will be attending the premiere of “A Love Letter” a new film from art giant and 80's hip hop hair enthusiast Stephen ESPO Powers in conjunction with Ogilvy & Mather New York and Joshua Liner Gallery. The short film is part documentary part fiction and focus’s on a large scale mural project that ESPO undertook in his home town of Philly. Along side the screening is the opening of “Flights of Genius” a series of commissioned murals on display by the celebrated artist that reinterpret the words and quotes of agency founder David Ogilvy, one of the most influential and important figures in modern advertising. Power’s bold graphic style, reminiscent of vintage advertising illustrations puts a unique emphasis on famous Ogilvy sayings and transforms them into actionable words designed to inspire the viewer.  Check out the short clip below and stay tuned for more exclusive coverage of tonight’s event later this week.

AJ Fosik Designs New Mastodon LP Cover

Looks like another Onomatopoeia favorite AJ Fosik is behind Matodon's new LP cover for The Hunter. I've been following AJ's work for quite some time now and his 3d wood scultputres are absolutely breathtaking.

Cover art for Kanye West and Jay Z's - "Watch The Thrown" leaks

I'm always interested in Kanye West's album covers having past used some of my favorite artists Takashi Murakami, Kaws, and George Condo, who coincidentally have all done skateboard graphics for Supreme. This time around the art is said to be created by Riccardo Tisci, creative director for Givenchy.

There is a whole lot of hoopla surrounding "Watch The Thrown" but if the 2010 collaboration "That's My Bitch" and lead single H.A.M. are anything to judge by the album is gonna be a monster.
