FaltyDL‘s forthcoming album, Hardcourage, is set to drop on Ninja Tune January 22nd, and with it the lead single, featuring Ed Macfarlane of Friendly Fires entitled “She Says”. The visuals come courtesy of a  rollerskating troupe who apparently can be found at Central Park doing their thing regularly. 

Video: FaltyDL - "Straight & Arrow"

New York producer FaltyDL’s “Straight & Arrow” single drops via Ninja Tune on November 12th and features some remix action from the likes of Four Tet and Gold Panda. In celebration, a new and odd video has been released for the song with the description “a song performed by a symphony of fingertips.” Would be interesting to know if the twitches accruing in the subjects are actually related to the music or not?

Video: Crate Diggers: Cut Chemist & DJ Z-Trip

Fuse TV’s Crate Diggers is a fun show if you are into collecting music, and as you can image pretty much everyone at Onomatopoeia is. I thought I would throw up two recent episodes of the show featuring two collectors who are widely known for their obsessive and impressive vinyl collections. We start things off with Cut Chemist of the Jurassic 5 who speaks from the Stable, aka his vault of vinyl where he shares his experiences and stories from a lifetime of digging, revealing rare treasures, his method of organizing, and growing up as a DJ in a musical household.

DJ Z-Trip rounds out the second video with a discussion on his 60 thousand or so records. The DJ is quite humorous about things revealing that he lost a many a girlfriends over his collection often spending vacations searching for record stores instead of on the beach! Like the Chemist video Z shares his preferred method of organizing his collection, BPM’s, as well as stories about his first record ever purchased, his most expensive record, show vinyl, mixing and collecting rock over the more popular jazz and funk and why he is known as the king of the dollar.

Video: Robert Crumb - "The Complete Record Cover Collection"

This is a pretty great video focusing on Robert Crumb’s record cover art. Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her album Cheap Thrills. It was the only “in” the artist  needed, especially since he had been fascinated with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country, and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a teen. This early collaboration proved very successful and Crumb went on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb's artistic interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s.  Check out the video below and make sure to pick up “R. Listen: John Zorn - "FatCat Mix #1"

So here is something pretty random and special...We're very pleased to let you know that FatCat's latest podcast is now available. Compiled by legendary American avant-garde composer, arranger, record producer, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist John Zorn, the podcast is divided into two parts (to be released over this week), made up of choice selections from his notoriously expansive record collection. As far as i know this is a first for Zorn.

Some words from John Zorn about the Podcast...

"About 30 years ago Derek Bailey invited me on a Company tour of Britain. Evan Parker, Steve Lacy, Misha Mengelberg, George Lewis, Jamie Muir, Derek and I traveled by van for 3 weeks from Brighton to Edinburgh. George Lewis (then as now always ahead of the pack) brought a walkman. The walkman changed everything. Being able to choose your own playlist and listen to it privately made traveling so much easier. The process of making a personalized "playlist" was laborious, and days were spent making mix tapes (music romances) that compiled music from all over the map. 12-16 tracks usually fit on one side of a cassette so 32 LPs/CDs were chosen from a collection and one track from each was loaded in careful sequence—the wilder the juxtaposition the better. The sequence was crucial and I learned a LOT from making these tapes. Everything you do touches your creativity and there is little doubt that these tapes informed a lot of my own composing, from the file card pieces like Spillane (long form composition as mix tape), the compositions and repertory of Naked City (band as mix tape), the Music Romance series on Tzadik (cd as mix tape) to even perhaps the more recent Masada Marathons (concert as mix tape). Today this method of listening to music is becoming more and more prominent via the iPod shuffle—but there still is nothing quite like a personalized and carefully sequenced "Music Romance." The music chosen here comes entirely from my laptop's library and contains pieces that inspire me, tracks that comfort me, music you may not be aware of and some rarities few people have heard. Please enjoy."
