Listen: Meow the Jewels - "Oh My Darling Don’t Meow"

Clearly I’m not posting as much as I used to, simply put I’ve just become a little more selective. I’m sure now that winter is around the corner again I’ll be spending more time in front of the computer screen, my loss will be your gain in theory.

Last week Killer Mike and El-P shared another Meow The Jewels tune from the forthcoming remix project due out by the end of September. Just Blaze take’s on “Oh My Darling Don’t Cry” turning it into “Oh My Darling Don’t Meow.” It’s another winner for sure but misses some of that brilliant playfulness that Boots captured when he manned the deck for “Meowrly.” The cat sounds could be a lot higher in the mix and there could be more of them but that’s just me nitpicking at the end of the day.

El-P and Killer Mike finally shared a full track from their Meow The Jewels Project last night via their Beats Radio 1 show, WRTJ. "Meowrly" is our first proper taste of the “joke campaign” that became a reality late last year. But the cat version of "Early", which features Boots, who also helped with the remix is definitely no joke; in fact I would say the production on this is even better than the original!

Meow The Jewels has no official release date at this point as it was originally scheduled to drop in December of 2014; but if the rest of the record sounds as good as this then it will be well worth the wait.

Run the Jewels have released the video for "Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)", their Run the Jewels 2 track featuring Rage Against the Machine's Zack De LaRocha. The clip was directed by A.G. Rojas and is topical given the current social political climate here in the U.S.

Run The Jewels continue to embrace the spotlight with consistent output of treats for their old and new fans alike. Their latest video for “Lie, Cheat, Steal” is another notch in the belt and re-teams director Ruff Mercy with the dynamic duo. The video was shot on a cold London night in a dreary outdoor parking lot, check it below…

Video: Giraffage – “Tell Me”

Directed by Adam Avilla, Giraffage's chopped up electro pop jam "Tell Me" is one of the strangest videos I’ve seen in a very long while. A suitably tweaked music video, featuring a canine cast like you've never seen before. Donuts, emotions, childbirth... the circle of life really! Video: Run The Jewels – “Oh My Darling (Don't Cry)”

Run The Jewels teams up again with Timothy Saccenti  to continue their onslaught on the music biz with yet another new video to share with their fans. “Oh My Darling (Don't Cry)” is a  little more straight forward than the scripted visuals for “Blockbuster Night Part 1,” dropping a clear narrative for some slightly trippy drug induced footage of the two emcee’s rapping.

Am I the only one who is starting to think this whole Run The Jewels praise from everyone is as late as late can be? Remember when the U.S. finally fell in love with Daft Punk a good 15 plus years after everyone else did? Both these emcee’s have been releasing quality music for years yet it would seem that only now the mass public is on board, great for them but it’s all a bit strange when I see Killer Mike on CNN talking Fergeson more than I see him on TV spitting rhymes. Again both Jaime and Mike deserve the praise and have interesting things to say, I just hope these people are around once the public has moved on to their next obsession, or perhaps I’m the type of guy who would prefer if they just left now?

Trevor Kane directs the latest Run The Jewels video, “Blockbuster Night Part 1.” The clip see’s the rappers half-assing it as EMT’s on the streets of Atlanta, spending their time getting up to no good. Black Lips' Cole Alexander also makes an appearance as a patient.

Fool's Gold keep on beefing up their roaster with quality artists like San Francisco-based producer Giraffage. “Be With You” is a fun-filled trip packed with base drops, stretched vocal snippets, skittish beats and warped carnival  synths that you can check out below.  If you like what you hear you can grab the track and more off of the new eight-song Fool's Gold compilation below HERE.

Video: Danny Brown - "Smokin' & Drinkin'"

I have made it pretty clear time and time again that Danny Brown’s “Smokin’ & Drinkin’” off of 2013’s Old LP is my gold standard for hip hop, it’s all about that crazy flow that switches from whimsical to menacing from verse to verse over an A-Trak beat that sounds like it was birthed from a murky, gator filled, swamp.

Today I got to fall in love with the tune all over again since a video made its way onto the internet that showcases, you guessed it, smoking and drinking.

Video: Duck Sauce – “NRG”

Duck Sauce kill it with yet another super fun video, this time for the appropriately titled, high energy tune, “NRG.” The clip was directed by Dugan O'Neal and reminds me of a scene from the film Requiem For A Dream if it took place in a much happier world; A-Trak and Van Helden go from watching some late night TV infomercials to staring in them alongside actor Jon C. Daly.

A-Trak and Armand Van Helden have been busy the last couple of years building up a sound and fan base for their playful dance floor project, Duck Sauce. The appropriately titled Quack, which is out April 15th via A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold label, can now be streamed below in its entirety. Get them dancing shoes out as this one is sure to please all the filter-disco fans out there during those hot summer nights, highlights for myself include "Chariots Of The Gods," ""Radio Stereo" and "NRG".

Danny Brown shared a new video for Old track "25 Bucks", which features Purity Ring's Megan James.   In the clip, directed by NORTON, Danny and Megan interact with an environment frozen in time.

PartySupplies return with the new 80’s inspired  "4 More Months 2 Go". Not sure if the duo are hinting at a sophomore album already but the tune most certainly sounds like more than just a B-side. They had this to say about the song…

“To make this song we started by slightly interpolating and looping an instrumental section of Andrew Gold's 1977 hit song "Lonely Boy." This loop became a platform for us to explore what is now this song. Please Enjoy and all respect due to the songwriter Andrew Gold and his family. RIP Andrew Gold.”

Things were running at a snails pace on this end over the holidays so I’m a bit behind on things (everyone needs a vacation now and again.) So I’m gonna throw up some things that happened in the last couple weeks starting things off with the latest Run The Jewels video.

“A Christmas F**cking Miracle” appropriately hit just days before the 25th and sees El-P and Killer Mike going all out with the holiday spirit in the Joey Garfield directed clip.

Danny Brown's Old is set to drop next week on October 8th via Fool’s Gold but you can now stream it in its entirety via Spotify below. The follow up to the instant classic that was XXX features guest spots from emcee’s such as SchoolboyQ, Charli XCX, Purity Ring, Freddie Gibbs, A$AP Rocky and Ab-soul. Production duties are handled by Paul White, A-Trak, Rustie, Skywlkr and more.

Old is most certainly not XXX part two, the Detroit native shows a lot of growth as a writer and overall I would say that  the record is a little less “weird” than its predecessor but no less unique possibly making it a little easier to digest for more casual listeners. Production is to say the least colorful jumping all over the place stylistically often revealing a new favorite as the album progress’s from start to finish.

Still playing catch-up here after being out of town for a week.  

One of my favorite rappers these last several years has been Danny Brown, if that’s a surprise to you it really shouldn't be because we post a lot of his stuff here at Onomatopoeia. Brown’s Old is set to drop on September 30^th via Fools Gold but tracks have been steadily dropping over the passing weeks and months to keep fans interested. “ODB” is the first official single and video and is produced by Paul White who keep things super trippy and off the beaten path, a perfect match for Danny’s flow.  The equally trippy video comes curtsy of Ruffmercy which makes this one a perfect hat trick!
