Former At The Drive-In/Defacto/Mars Volta heavyweights Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodríguez-López return to the scene with a new band called Antemasque. The project reunites the veterans with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who of course has played on several Mars Volta records and other various projects with the duo. “4AM” is most certainly closer in sound to the work that has been heard post ATDI in that there is a strong 70’s psychedelic rock influence to it while "Hanging In The Lurch" probably has more in common with ATDI.
Here is some bonus video footage of the band during the creative process...
Animal Collective shared their latest video from 2012′s head
trip, Centipede Hz . “Monkey Riches” is pretty much as odd of a video as the
music that is it playing companion to; in the six minute clip director Jack Kubizne shares the misadvebtures of a
bedridden wizard played by actor Martin Pfefferkon.
Bosnian Rainbows is a new band featuring Teri Gender Bender
(Le Butcherettes), Nicci Kasper (Kudu, KRS-ONE), Deantoni Parks (John Cale, The
Mars Volta), and Omar Rodriguez Lopez (The Mars Volta, At the Drive-In). The
group formed during the summer of 2012 and will release their self-titled debut
LP June 25th 2013 onSargent House. While the four members respective pedigrees
are as distinctive as the names they're attached to, the group itself is an
entity all its own, unlike any other project any of them have been in. Check
our lead single “Turtle Neck” who’s video is made up of photographs taken
around the world while on tour.
Gaspar Noé continues his streak of working in the medium of
music videos having recently completed the latest set of visuals for the Animal Collective. “Applesauce” is meant to be viewed in complete darkness and might
make you hungry.
Been a long while since we posted a Sunday Matinée so I
figured we were about due for one, or in this case two since we’ve been dropping
the ball. First up isBritish group ∆(pronounced Alt-J) who have been gaining a lot of
steam since their début album, An Awesome Wave, came out in the summer, a short
and sweet affair packed with many memorable moments of catchy pop, hip-hopbeats
and a trip-hop atmosphere.
The band just won Britain’s coveted Mercury Prize this week so I thought why
not post this full performance on Seattle’s KEXP from September.
Second up is Swedish band Goat, a collective who hail from a
small and very remote village called Korpolombolo and play a crazy mix of psychedelic
funk, tribal rhythms, kraut rock, prog-rock, and folk they describe as world
music because it draws from so many places( as apposed to the usual, limited
(Afrocentric) definition of the term.) Like many of the bands that hail from
the cold north Goat applies a lot of theatrics and satanic imagery, hence the
name of some of the tracks including Goatman, Goathead and
Goatlord but unlike a lot of those bands Goat are in no way a metal band. Check
em' out doing their thing live at
Truckstop Alaska, in Gothenburg from 2012-10-27.
The French are good at many a thing, but have been knocking 2 things specifically out of the park the past 20 years.... synth music & animation. When they team the two together, wonderful things happen. One bastion for fresh animation is the Goeblins digital-media school in Paris whose year end student shows always amaze. One such film from this years crop is Distance created by Todd deJong, Tom Law, Wandrille Maunoury, Etienne Meois, Jonathan Vermeschand a number of other students at the school. The music is done by Martin Sumeire.
It is a short film that utilizes some really great techniques and is hard to believe is made by such a small team. Great tripped out sequence which gets bonus points from this website.
Trio of "making of..." videos each produced by one of the seperate animators.....
SF band, Sic Alps are back and are prepping their 5th album self-titled Sic Alps,to be released on Sept. 11th through Drag City Records. The track "Glyphs" was released a little while back but the band have recently released a video for it, directed John Harlow & vocalist Mike Donovan. This smoke filled romp through Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach will make any West Coaster feel homesick.
The Sic Alps are about to embark on a massive North American tour starting next week.
Animal Collective are gearing up to release their
follow up to 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. Centipede Hz will be out on
September 4th via Domino but you can now listen to the whole thing HERE till
9pm EST tonight. And just in case you missed it, we shared the Danny Perez
directed video for lead single, "Today's Supernatural" on Friday which you can view
HERE.
Animal Collectiveare gearing up to release their latest
album, Centipede Hz, on September 4th. We already heard lead single "Today's Supernatural" and now we get the Danny Perez directed video. Featuring a colorful go-kart racing in the desert,
trippy visuals, face paint, dismembered arms that beat up a weird dragon thing,
a pretty intense ending and more strange and fun stuff.
I loves me some Black Moth Super Rainbow. They make what I think of as "multi-mood" music. It's good for a long car ride and works just as well for lying immobile on the ground. The band just released a video for the new song "Windowshield Smasher" which will appear on their upcoming EP Windowshield Smasher (August 28th) as well as their 5th and upcoming full length album Cobra Juicy (October 23rd).
For this new album the band decided to release it on their own Rad Cult label and started a Kickstarter to help fund it. Now normally I find Kickstarter to be annoying and a bit of a cop-out in regards to artists/people "finding a way" to release their art but I would like a new BMSR album, so I can't complain. and its actually one of the more interesting Kickstarter campaigns I've seen in a long time. The album was recorded at home and is looking to be released in various ways.
Pre-orders comes with a giant Orange latex mask (as seen in the video) that one of its teeth is actually a USB that contains the new album on it digitally. Some pre-order packages will also come with poloraids, sketches and customized vinyl sleeve art. Good stuff. Be sure to read more about it on their Kickstarter page. If that isn't enough, maybe this video by Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) will help...

Das Pop is a Belgian band formed in Ghent.... and that's all I know about them. They haven't put out a new new since 2009 but here is a new video for the track "The Game". It's super tripped out, nice and colorfully psychedelic and directed by Will Sweeeney of the design group Big Active. I like it...
BONUS
I like Sweeney's style a bunch so I added another one of his music vids as a bonus,... "The Parachute Ending" by French group Birdy Nam Nam. Same trippy goodness...
Brooklyn’s premiere psychedelic pop act, AnimalCollective, will make their return with Centipede Hz, out
September 4th on Domino. “Today’s Supernatural” is the first single. The tune
premiered on Animal
Collective Radio, which is going down every Sunday night at 9 p.m.
EST. Check out the new track below and pre-order the album here.
Last year to kick off their tour, folkie-rock band Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros played 5-nights at the Old Vic Tunnels in London. They filled those 5 nights with as explosive a visual and auditory treat as they could with performance art, psychedelic light shows and film screenings (Holy Mountain, Renegade, etc..), experimental dance and of course music. It was pitched as a "360 degrees experience" with this happening in different rooms and on every turn. A wild, wild West in the middle of London. Looked cool to me. As expected all 5-nights sold out.
The folks at the Old Vic Tunnels created a short 10-min documentary capturing the behind-the-scenes of this event.
The Mars Volta released a video for the 15 minute “Malakin Jewel” off of their latest LP, Noctourniquet, this morning. Keeping things elegantly simple the black and white video focuses on the band performing live and can be viewed below...
This is a track that has been on my playlist for a while now. Jonathan Wilson is a musician/producer who has helped bring back some of the swagger to the Lauren Canyon psychedelic/folk scene its been missing since the 70's. He released his first album Frankie Ray in 2007 and its follow up Gentle Spirit a couple years after but both were small presses with little distribution. Last year, Gentle Spirit was re-released by Bella Union Records with much wider exposure and received praise from critics.
"Desert Raven" is a track off of his latest album. The video is pretty nonsensical but whatever... its a good song.
SF musician Ty Segall has been busy lately. Along with somewhat constantly touring he recently released an album entitled Hair with the White Fence's Tim Presley, and has another album already set to drop on June 26th entitled Slaughterhouse with his touring band named the Ty Segall Band.
"Swag" is a track off a split LP from 2009. The video is made by Alex William and I'm pretty sure it is an unofficial video but regardless it is a strong song. If you get a chance to see Segall live do so cause he'll statically eeessssplode your ears and singe your eyeballs.
After several years of solo and side projects, AnimalCollective, much like Voltron, have once again come together to be at full strength
and grace us with some new material. The latest offering from the Baltimore
quartet stays true to their psychedelic pop sound. In “Honeycomb” the hectic
instrumentation takes the lead over the vocals, while “Gotham” does the exact opposite
and chooses to focus on the vocals more than the music. The two songs, which
will likely be on a forthcoming full-length, will be released as a single on
June 26 through Domino records – listen to both below.
Psych punk rockers The Mars Volta will release their latest LP, Noctourniquet, on March 27th. The band dropped a track today that closes out the LP to give us a little taste of what’s to come. “Zed And Two Naughts” is somewhat reminiscent of their Deloused days can be heard below…
It’s also worth noting that Sonny Kay handled cover art duties for the band.
Back in 2009, beat-master Blockhead released his 4th album The Music Scene (Ninja Tune Records). A year later animator A.F.Schepperd created a video for the title track "The Music Scene" that still has eyes buzzing today. Television is struggling to gain the attention of animals once humans no longer exist, or at least that is my interpretation. Regardless, its awesome.
You may recognize Schepperd's work from the Rome - "Two Against One" music video, posted earlier.
NYC based artist Holton Roweris an interesting artist. His art has many skeptics and tends to have a more interesting creation process than final product. But the process is extremely interesting in its simplicity and visualization as it occurs. Pieces are lava flows of variously colored paint that keep going creating 3D structures.
An example of this process was captured and edited by David Kaufman. Think of the final piece what you will but its a pretty fascinating thing to watch.
