Video: The Blood Brothers Live @ Warsaw, Brooklyn October 5 2014 (Full Set)

The Blood Brothers reunited this year, and made their way to NYC over last weekend where they first played Central Park's Modern Sky Fest on Saturday and then headlined a show at Warsaw on Sunday. The crowed was definitely hyped and full of fans as the venue erupted when the Seattle band took the stage. From that point it didn’t let up with continuous, dancing, stage diving and crowd surfing from all in attendance. This was my sixth time seeing the band, the last being in 2006 or so and they sounded awesome, even more impressive since this was only their fourth show together since 2007. Looking in the crowed you could spot Blood Orange's Dev Hynes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, who plays with Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of The Blood Brothers in Head Wound City, all enjoying the set list made up of songs from the majority of their LP’s.

Emo veterans Mineral were only around from 1994 to 1997, having broken up before the release of their second and final album, EndSerenading, but like many bands from the era they recently reformed for some live shows, including a handful in NYC last week.

Brooklyn's Saint Vitus plaid host to the Texas troop’s first night which saw the influential group play a 17 minute set filled with fan favorites that you can now enjoy from below if your town isn't playing host to the very short tour, and don't worry they do play “Parking Lot.”

Nice, I’ve been holding off sharing any footage of the DriveLike Jehu reunion show that took place this holiday weekend at Balboa Park until quality film popped up. Chances are you’ve seen some videos in the last 48 hours but even Pitchfork’s shared footage was from a lousy angle and cut off Mark Trombino which as you know is a major sacrilege .  Well I’m here to let you know that if you are a fan and couldn't make it out to California for the gig some quality footage is now available to enjoy, but first things first.  If you are not familiar with Drive Like Jehu then please leave this website right now and go and spend some time discovering their music. I appreciate your interest and loyalty but they are much more important source of inspiration than any of the ramblings one can find here. If you are here because I’m usually the person who provides said information, here is a very brief rundown…

Drive Like Jehu were/are an American post-hardcore  band from San Diego California active from 1990 to 1995. Formed by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rick Froberg and lead guitarist John Reis following the breakup of their band Pitchfork, the band's lineup also included bassist Mike Kennedy and drummer Mark Trombino. Their music was characterized by multisectioned compositions, interlocking guitar patterns, orchestrated builds and releases, and elliptical melodies that produced a distinctive sound amongst other post-hardcore acts and impacted the evolution of hardcore punk into emo.

Rick and John have both been pretty active since Drive Like Jehu ended and can be publicly seen performing on the regular with their various projects including but not limited to Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes, Obits, Night Marchers and more.  Mark has made his impact from behind the scenes and is heavily responsible for not just some of the most important and influential post punk/emo albums of the era but really helped define the entire scene’s sound as a whole. As for Mike? It would seem that education was Mr. Kennedy’s priority as he went back to school to study chemistry.

The band has said this will absolutely be a one off show, but I find absolutes for these types of things to often be temporary. Rumor has it the reasoning behind the show was that it was a rare opportunity to be able to use the park’s organ which Dr. Carol Williams lends her talents to for the performance.

So with little further delay sit back and enjoy Drive Like Jehu and Dr. Carol Williams at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.

Video: Outkast Live at Coachella April 2014 (Full Set)

I suppose this will be the most talked about set at this year’s Coachella festival, as people really seem to love themselves some Outkast. Of course at this point the duo of Big Boi and André 3000 has announced many festival dates that will take them through most major cities and festival circuit’s this summer.  Fans should be pleased as both these rappers have been doing this for years and are pro’s in their delivery. The hour and a half set includes selections from multiple albums with most of the radio hits present and guest emcee’s to boot.  Of course these video’s are usually taken down super quickly so get you fix now while you can.

Throwback Thursdays: Big Black - live at CBGB July 1986

It’s been a while since we posted a new Throwback Thursday so we were about due for one to say the least.  I always try to balance things out on the blog with what types of music content we post, in theory multiple contributors should help in this department as we all have different tastes, but this has been a solo effort for the last several months as my fellow bloggers keep busy with their day to day lives. The end result is that I have to try and police myself somewhat to make sure you, the viewer, aren't being bombarded with 99% hip hop/electronic oriented content.  In all honesty I think the mix tape culture that is hip hop in 2013 just provides way more content on a day to day basis than rock can keep up with.

Whatever the case my roots have always been in punk rock and this week’s Throwback Thursday focuses on one of the most influential in the genre.

What we have below is a Chicago’s Big Black performance from July 13, 1986 at CBGB’s in New York, filmed by Greg Fasolino. Black's abrasive sound was characterized by distinctively trebley guitars and the use of a drum machine, elements which precursored industrial rock. Albini's lyrics openly dealt with loaded topics including murder, rape, child sexual abuse, arson, racism, and misogyny, so you know, the classics! The 45 minute set list is broken down below…

Video: Death Grips Full Boiler Room x Ray-Ban LIVE Show at SXSW Warehouse

What we got below is a full length HD performance of DeathGrips live at Ray-Ban x Boiler Room's SXSW warehouse showcase that took place on the 16th of March 2013.  The performance clocks in at 34 minutes and shows a different point of view than that seen recently in the video for “Lock Your Doors,” which you may recall used footage from cameras the band had attached to their heads. As always the showis pretty raw and intense.

Listen/Download: The Avalanches – DJ Set @ Splendour in the Grass 2006

A "new" mix popped up today on the Avalanches mix tape club, the mix isn’t actually a new mix in that it was recently recorded but rather in that it was made available to members of the club. This one hails from 2006 and was performed live at Splendour in the Grass in Belongil Fields, outside of Byron Bay, Australia. The mix is somewhat 80’s centric in it’s vibe but features artists from artists beyond the 1980’s including Prince, Def Leppard, Daft Punk, Gnarls Barkley, Salt N’ Pepper, The Gossip, David Bowie, Midnight Juggernauts, Bon Jovi, Mylo, The Rapture, The Rolling Stones, The Sound Of Music and more. The 45-minute mix is a total blast and is yet another reminder of why we desperately need a new LP from the collective, maybe 2013 will be the year.

Sunday Matinée - Celebrating Sunday's With A Live Clip: Yeah Yeah Yeahs Perform Two New Songs in Pamona

It’s been a while since we have heard anything new from the Yeah YeahYeahs but luck would have it that the trio are set to release a new album in the spring and this week performed some new material from the new record for a lucky crowed in Pomona, California. Reportedly, the first of the two videos below is titled "Suck Young Blood".

Video: BBC Radio 1 Special, DJ Benji B & Composer Grant Windsor Reinterpret the best of 2012

DJ Benji B teamed up with writer and composer Grant Windsor for an hour long BBC Radio 1 special in which a 16-piece string ensemble play along side a variety of electronic and hip-hop tracks. Benji B handles the decks while a string section provides new layers to some of 2012′s biggest tunes and more. Sunday Matinée - Celebrating Sunday's With A Live Clip: Alt-J (live on KEXP) & Goat (live at Truckstop Alaska)

Been a long while since we posted a Sunday Matinée so I figured we were about due for one, or in this case two since we’ve been dropping the ball. First up is British group ∆ (pronounced Alt-J) who have been gaining a lot of steam since their début album, An Awesome Wave, came out in the summer, a short and sweet affair packed with many memorable moments of catchy pop, hip-hop beats and a trip-hop atmosphere. The band just won Britain’s coveted Mercury Prize this week so I thought why not post this full performance on Seattle’s KEXP from September.

Second up is Swedish band Goat, a collective who hail from a small and very remote village called Korpolombolo and play a crazy mix of psychedelic funk, tribal rhythms, kraut rock, prog-rock, and folk they describe as world music because it draws from so many places( as apposed to the usual, limited (Afrocentric) definition of the term.) Like many of the bands that hail from the cold north Goat applies a lot of theatrics and satanic imagery, hence the name of some of the tracks including Goatman, Goathead and Goatlord but unlike a lot of those bands Goat are in no way a metal band. Check em' out doing their thing live at Truckstop Alaska, in Gothenburg from 2012-10-27.

Video: Fishing – “Choy Lin”

The cut-out visuals for Fishing’s “Choy Lin” are quite spectacular. For those not familiar the duo hail from that deep green inland sea just 38 nautical miles west of Sydney, known as The Blue Mountains. They produce deep, beat driven ocean-scapes that sweep you far away while keeping your feet firmly tapping something catchy.

“Choy Lin” is Fishing’s newest single taken from a 7” vinyl due for release in October on Waaga Records. Which will be followed by the B-side “White Sheet Beach.” For now this is only the appetizer, the main course will be coming early next year in the form of an album.  Directed by the band with a little help from SPOD.

Toronto, post-bop, instrumental hip hop jazz trio, BADBADNOTGOOD, spent their weekend at home playing  MadDecent Block Party, during their set, the band  performed an absolutely fantastic cover of TNGHT‘s recently released single, "Bugg’n" which you can check out below….
