Listen: Joanna Newsom - "Leaving The City"

New Yorker’s love to leave the city, it makes them feel special to reconnect with nature, they even pay top dollar to escape their overpriced apartments to go do yoga and play farmer for the weekend. They do so in areas that often resemble the various countries and rural towns around the world they ran away from in the first place!  It’s all very confusing but the point is Joanna Newsom has shared another new song off her forthcoming album Divers and it's called "Leaving The City."

Divers is out on Drag City on October 23rd and along side Newsom herself the record features arrangements from Nico Muhly, Dirty Projectors' Dave Longstreth, and Ryan Francesconi.  Steve Albini is behind the boards again with Noah Georgeson.

Video: Joanna Newsom – “Sapokanikan”

Joanna Newsom shared the first taste of her forthcoming LP, Divers today in the form of “Sapokanikan.” The Paul Thomas Anderson directed clip see’s Newsom walking the streets of NYC while singing her tale, day turning to night.

I’ve never really thought of Newsom’s albums as a series of singles, they are parts of a larger world that has to be experienced in its entirety to get the complete picture. Thats being said “Sapokanikan” has several movements in itself changing throughout and  steadily building up.  The song clocks in at just over 5 minutes but it actually feels longer as there is quite a lot to digest lyrically.

Wow it’s been six months since I last shared a new playlist, it was October, almost Halloween and the long winter was just about to get started with us. Well It’s late April now and we are starting to hit those much needed sunny days so it only seemed right I buckle down and finish this extended edition to make up for the long gap with something to play on those outdoor adventures and road trips.  Online Dating is what I’m calling Vol.6 in the series and its an eclectic eighty-eight song long mix including five and a half hours of music from the past, present and future, spanning a wide range of genera’s that's sure to have a little something for every internet personality.

Last week Josh Tillman shared a new tune from his forthcoming Father John Misty LP, I Love You, Honeybear by the name of “Bored in the USA.” The tune continues down the already fine path laid out in Fear Fun, lyrically focusing on sex, drugs and alcohol.

Video: Volcano Choir - "Tiderays"

Volcano Choir have shared a new video for "Tiderays", from last year's Repave LP, a record that you may recall made my year-end list in 2013. You may also recall The band have actually already shared some visuals for the tune in the past when they released a series of  re-purposed Michinori Saigo instillation art video captures for each song on the Repave LP; but I guess this acts as some sort of official version away from that universe. The video was directed by Kyle Buckley and Andi Woodward in conjunction with 551project and stars dancers from the Milwaukee Ballet.

So I’ve been off the grid for a moment enjoying some much needed time away from NYC with good friends in Atlanta. This next share is something I grabbed before heading off to the south which was only too appropriate considering the teenager not only hails from the city but also creates a unique sound that mixes all the elements of his town’s rich gospel, rap, folk, soul, and indie history.

The project contains thirteen songs which eclectically jump around, sometimes falling a little short but often hitting a creative high note. With the release of the tape Raury was instantly signed to a major label, which I guess is great for him if you put much stock into the increasingly archaic practice that is the business of doing music; So I’m sure his star will only continue to rise in the near future as the machine starts to turn its wheels.

You can stream the tape from below and download it if you like what you hear and I also threw up the AndrewDonoho directed video for “God’s Whisper” which some of you have probably seen at this point but will serve as a good intro for those who haven’t.

I’ve actually shared several tunes from London based multi instrumentalist, musician, composer and producer Cosmo Sheldrake but never properly introduced him by name here on the blog. He regularly performs on banjo, loop station, keyboards, double bass, drums, penny whistle, sousaphone, accordion and many more instruments, of which some you will definitely pick up on his début single.

“The Moss” is set to drop sometimes in April via Transgressive Records but truth be told I’m feeling the B-side more so that’s what I’m sharing with y’all today.

Animal Collective shared their latest video from 2012′s head trip, Centipede Hz . “Monkey Riches” is pretty much as odd of a video as the music that is it playing companion to; in the six minute clip director Jack Kubizne  shares the misadvebtures of a bedridden wizard played by actor Martin Pfefferkon.

Ex-Fleet Foxes member Josh Tillman, aka Father John Misty released a new video for Fear Fun cut "Funtimes in Babylon." The clip was co-directed by Tillman himself alongside Grant James and has an old VHS tape type quality to it.

Video: Youth Lagoon - "Mute"

Youth Lagoon has shared the new video for "Mute," from the recently released sophomore LP, Wondrous Bughouse. The visuals were directed by Tyler T. Williams (who also worked on the clips for Youth Lagoon’s "July" and"Montana". What we get is a series of strange images and events that wouldn't be out of place in Twin Peaks.

Listen: Alela Diane - "The Way We Fall"

Alela Diane is currently rapping up her latest LP, entitled About Farewell, and decided to share one of the completed songs from it in the form of "The Way We Fall." The Portland songstress goes with a two-part composition, in its first section we hear her sing of  lost love in the manner of a short story while in the second half we get something more akin to an elegy but with a sort of hope at the end of the tunnel. Diane is accompanied by her guitar, flutes and also goes with a drum which seems to only make an appearance in about half her songs.
