And like clockwork Hudson Mohawkshared the latest volume of
his annual mixtape series and celebration of all things love, Slow Jams 8. This
year HudMo even included his own take on the genre with an extra track in the
download file titled ‘Forever 1", feat. Olivier Daysoul and Dorian Concept. You
got to give it to the Glasgow producer he takes this shit seriously.
FKA Twigs has shared a video for "Pendulum",
from last year's stellar LP1. The clip was directed by Twigs herself, and is
a mixture of imagery and themes the artist is clearly drawn to and has experimented
with in the past, happily they are themes that work well with the artist’s
music and keep me coming back for more.
So I’ve been off the grid for a moment enjoying some much
needed time away from NYC with good friends in Atlanta. This next share is
something I grabbed before heading off to the south which was only too
appropriate considering the teenager not only hails from the city but also creates
a unique sound that mixes all the elements of his town’s rich gospel, rap,
folk, soul, and indie history.
The project contains thirteen songs which eclectically jump around,
sometimes falling a little short but often hitting a creative high note. With
the release of the tape Raury was instantly signed to a major label, which I guess
is great for him if you put much stock into the increasingly archaic practice
that is the business of doing music; So I’m sure his star will only continue to
rise in the near future as the machine starts to turn its wheels.

Whisper” which some of you have probably seen at this point but will serve as a
good intro for those who haven’t.
Wow it’s like the early two thousands all over again with
music news this week. First the Blood Brothers announce a reunion show in NYC
and now Baltimore’s original two piece band,Celebration, are back, albeit with
a new larger lineup. Now working with Bella Union, Celebration's forthcoming
full length 'Albumin' will be released on August 18th and is a further
exploration of punk, soul and psychedelia, check out “Chariot” below as well as
the campy infomercial for a game that will be included with pre-orders of the
new LP.
One week before the release of their self-titled debut album
via XL Recordings, Jungle have
shared the clip for their latest single, “Time.” Directed by Oliver Hadlee Pearchalongside band member ‘J’, the guys stick to the inspiration they have been using
thus far, dancing and you guessed it, more dancing.

I’ve shared quite a bit from Blood Orange via our playlist
series including the excellent single from the best
of 2013Cupid Deluxe LP, "You're Not Good Enough," but
had reserved the option to do a proper post on the Devonté Hynes project
until something post worthy came along and today is that day.
Looking like it drew inspiration from the 1980’s the video
for “You’re Not good Enough” is a good time featuring questionable lighting,
wardrobe choices, dance numbers and cameo’s including Friends' Samantha
Urbani and the video’s director Gia Coppola.
When Tiombe Lockhart isn't fronting Cubic Zirconia she is working on, amongst other things, solo material. The latest single from the soul singer is the Hudson Mohawke-produced “Can’t Get Enough” and the production on this bad boy comes in real strong, providing the perfect complimentary, albeit warped, soundscape to the powerful vocal(and video) performance of Tiombe. Pulling double duties the video was also directed by Lockhart and Thu Tran.
Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf visited the
Boiler Room to put on ridiculously long 12-hour DJ set that coincidentally will
accommodate all you folks throwing Super Bowl party’s today with a play list.

Odd Future member Frank Ocean has had a big big
year, his first commercial LP, ChannelORANGE, saw much critical and commercial
success so I figured for this week’s Throwback Thursday why not throw up Franks pre Nostalgia Ultra era music when he went by
the name of Lonny Breaux. The Collection below which I split into two

Fuse TV’s Crate Diggers is a fun show if you are into
collecting music, and as you can image pretty much everyone at Onomatopoeia is.
I thought I would throw up two recent episodes of the show featuring two
collectors who are widely known for their obsessive and impressive vinyl
collections. We start things off with Cut Chemist of the Jurassic 5 who speaks
from the Stable, aka his vault of vinyl where he shares his experiences and
stories from a lifetime of digging, revealing rare treasures, his method of
organizing, and growing up as a DJ in a musical household.
DJ Z-Trip rounds out the second video with a discussion on
his 60 thousand or so records. The DJ is quite humorous about things revealing
that he lost a many a girlfriends over his collection often spending vacations
searching for record stores instead of on the beach! Like the Chemist video Z
shares his preferred method of organizing his collection, BPM’s, as well as
stories about his first record ever purchased, his most expensive record, show
vinyl, mixing and collecting rock over the more popular jazz and funk and why
he is known as the king of the dollar.
Jessie Ware, who you might know from guest appearances on
SBTRKT’s tunes, drops a video for “Night Light” off her recently released
critically acclaimed album Devotion. "Night Light" sees Jessie's
powerhouse vocal shining to a backdrop of swirling guitars, majestic piano
flourishes and down-tempo rhythm. As a whole the LP really reminded me of Sade, so if you feelin' smooth try it out.
The video, directed by Chris Sweeney, shot in a beautiful monochrome tonality features
cameo appearances from Jessie's boyfriend and sister, Hannah Ware.
I love videos like this. Something about watching people who can actually dance and who don't give a sheeeet, makes you feel nice. Mayer Hawthorne grew up outside the motorcity, in Ann Arbor and has been making groovy dance-friendly tracks since 2006. He has been a fixture on Stones Throw Records and is helping bring back that Motown-y sound back to soul music.
"A Long Time" is a track off of the latest Mayer Hawthornealbum, How Do You Do and features footage from Highland Park's Channel 68, "The New Dance Show" (hosted by R.J. Watkins) a local-Michagan program that Hawthorne grew up with. The video is directed by Henry DeMaio
R&B singer Miguel is a smooth cat. His debut release in 2010, All I Want is You, came with limited success and dropped at a time when straight R&B music was being drowned out by Usher-like dance hits and hordes of vocoding clones. Since then he has taken his time to rediscover his sound with obvious results as the video for one of his new tracks "Adorn" (alternative video) has over 4 millions hits.
He is currently working on the release of a new album in 3 parts, the first EP Kaleidoscope Dream: The Water Preview was released on July 31, 2012, and the second EP Kaleidoscope Dream: The Air Preview will be released on September 11, 2012. Both contain 3 tracks and the album will include all six songs along with 5 additional songs.
I can't say this is something that would normally end up on my playlist but it is infectious and straight up.
