The latest installment of the Adult Swim Singles Series comes from FlyingLotus' rap alter-ego and personal favorite of mine Captain Murphy.  “Between Villians” sticks to the dark tone that was showcased on the Captain’s debute mixtape, Earl Sweatshirt DOOM alter-ego ViktorVaughn and Thundercat all make guest appearances. Video: Childish Gambino – “Clapping For the Wrong Reasons” Feat. Flying lotus, Chance The Rapper, Trinidad Jame$ & more.

After teasing at such a project several weeks back  we now have the director’s cut of Childish Gambino’s 24-minute short film titled “Clapping For The Wrong Reasons” The short features  Donald himself, Chance The Rapper, Flying Lotus, Trinidad Jame$, and several other Gambino collaborators and friends . The film falls someplace in-between truth and fiction it would seem with parts functioning as a preview of sorts to new Gambino music while other moments seem to focus on scripted narrative about life, relationships, dreams and more. Things get pretty strange during the last third when Gambino pulls a tooth out of his nostril in a scene that wouldn't be out of place in a horror film. Weird stuff but well worth the watch if you are a fan and another interesting chapter from Glover’s creative repertoire.

Video: “Wildcat” (Origins of an All-Black Rodeo in Oklahoma; Scored by Flying Lotus)

Kahlil Joseph and Flying Lotus have once again teamed up to give a new beautifully shot short abstract film entitled Wildcat.  According to Nowness, the film explores the "little-known African-American rodeo subculture," in Grayson, Oklahoma with Lotus handeling the score.

“Joseph, who is part of the Los Angeles-based What Matters Most film collective, visited the annual August rodeo in the sparsely populated Oklahoma town of Grayson (previously Wildcat), an event that attracts African-American bull riders, barrel racers and cowgirls from all over the Midwest and southern USA. He set out to celebrate the origins of the rodeo by paying respect to the spirit of Aunt Janet, a member of the family who founded the event, passed away last year and is embodied as the young girl in the film. “Black people are light years more advanced than the ideas and images that circulate would have you believe. The spaces we control and exist are my ground zero for filming, at least so far, and there are opportunities for me to tap into the energy,” says Joseph. “So an all-black town with an all-black rodeo in the American heartland was a kind of vortex or portal through which I could actually show this.”

Video: Captain Murphy – “The Killing Joke”

Without question my favorite Hip Hop LP of 2012 was Captain Murphy’s Duality mixtape aka the first release from Flying Lotus' hip-hop alter ego. Today The Captain decided to grace us a stand-alone video for "The Killing Joke". The black-and-white video keeps things mysterious with the hooded character and creepy vibe which plays well with the song even though his identity has long since been revealed. Make sure to check out the feature length video of Duality if you missed it back in 2012.

Video: H∆SHTAG$ Episode's 3 & 4 - “Don’t Call It Cloud Rap” + “Don’t Call It Beats” Documentary

Two new episodes of Red Bull Music Academy’s fantastic series of mini-documentaries entitled H∆SHTAG that explore the relationship of new music and the web.  The third installment looks at hip-hop, more specifically the micro-genre of Cloud Rap and features some heavy hitters associated with the sound including  MainAttrakionz, SpaceGhostPurrp, Flatbush Zombies and more who speak on their influences and how the internet has mutated a sound that was once determined by ones region. 

Episode 4 comes in strong with an all-star cast focusing on beats music and its origins in LA to the world-wide phenomenon it is today. Featuring interviews with the likes of Flying Lotus, TNGHT, Shlohmo, XXYXX, The Gaslamp Killer, Benji B, and more talking about how location, region and of course the internet has affected their genre and more specifically the opportunity for collaborations between beat makers and rappers living thousands of miles away from each other.  

Video: BBC Radio 1 Special, DJ Benji B & Composer Grant Windsor Reinterpret the best of 2012

DJ Benji B teamed up with writer and composer Grant Windsor for an hour long BBC Radio 1 special in which a 16-piece string ensemble play along side a variety of electronic and hip-hop tracks. Benji B handles the decks while a string section provides new layers to some of 2012′s biggest tunes and more. Video: Flying Lotus – “Tiny Tortures”

After revealing himself as the mysterious Captain Murphy last night via his first live performance at the Lo End Theory and releasing a deluxe edition of the incredible Duality mixtape, Flying Lotus is having a great week. Less than 24 hours later the man of many talents dropped a new video for Until The Quiet Comes track “Tiny Tortures”. The gorgeous, nightmarish video stars Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood and was directed by David Lenandowsky.

Listen/Download: Captain Murphy – “Duality Mixtape”

Been a big week for free mixtapes as we get yet another one, this time from Captain Murphy, who we first heard on Flying Lotus‘ “Between Friends” with Earl Sweatshirt. The mystery man(Tyler The Crteator?) made his album debut today as promised with Duality. The truly excellent collection features the pitch-shifting MC spitting drug-induced lyrics over beats from the likes of TNGHT, the Alchemist, Madlib and others with guest appearances coming from Azizi Gibson, Jeremiah Jae and more. You can stream the epic 35-minute audiovisual experience,  that was created by Xavier Magot, and is most certainly NOT SAFE FOR WORK, over at Murphy’s website.

The mysterious Captain Murphy returned today to share a new tune before his DU∆LITY mixtape hits on November 15th. The Brainfeeder-affiliated emcee dropped “Immaculation,” which features Azizi Gibson and Jeremiah Jae. According to Captain Murphy’s Twitter, it should be fairly clear as to what his real identity once DU∆LITY is released.

As previously reported LA beatmaker  Flying Lotus will release his fourth album, Until The Quiet Comes, on October 2nd, but as of today you can stream it in full courtesy of NPR. Featuring Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Thundercat and Erykah Badu, Untill the Quiet Comes is a glitchy, trippy experimental affair that should please people who already consider themselves a fan of the artist but equally do very little to convince those who are not.

Video: Flying Lotus - "Until The Quiet Comes" (Short Film by Kahlil Joseph)

As previously reported Flying Lotus' Until the Quiet Comes is out October 2 via Warp. In conjunction with the release the producer has debuted a short film featuring music from the album, directed by Kahlil Joseph. The album includes collaborations with Thom Yorke, Erykah Badu, Jonny Greenwood, Thundercat, and more.

The film features the Erykah Badu collaboration "See Thru to U", as well as two tracks featuring Niki Randa, "Hunger" and "Getting There".

Oh wow.  A collaboration that wouldn't have crossed my mind, not because it crosses genres, but because it brings together two of the querkiest and most imaginative representatives of one.  LA producer Flying Lotus works his hip-hop magic on a beat that perfectly compliments Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt's rhymes.  In typical FlyLo manner, the vocal isn't left intact with a subtle downward pitchshift that makes Earl's voice sound more menacing than ever. We also get an appearance from Captain Murphy who is rumored to be Flying Lotus's emcee alias or  possibly even Tyler The Creator under a different name!
