Video: Avalanches – “ Artzone Documentary”

It’s been a hot minute since I shared anything from The Avalanches;  Of course for the most part the collective hasn't actually given us anything new in well over a decade, but I've seemingly made it my duty to offer up a handful of treats to our readership each year to keep the name and interest alive.

What we have here is an ultra-rare short documentary about The Avalanches and the creation of their classic album Since I Left You and rehearsing their live sets. The clip was produced for and originally appeared on the Artzone TV show in 1999 and was written/directed and photographed by Philippe Charluet.

And like clockwork Hudson Mohawk shared the latest volume of his annual mixtape series and celebration of all things love, Slow Jams 8. This year HudMo even included his own take on the genre with an extra track in the download file titled ‘Forever 1", feat. Olivier Daysoul and Dorian Concept. You got to give it to the Glasgow producer he takes this shit seriously.

Arca returns to the fold today with some new music and it comes less than 24-hours after Björk officially announced her new LP which as previously reported heavily features the Venezuelan producer. We will have to wait till March until Vulnicura officially drops but luckily for fans Hood By Air had Alejandro put together Sheep, a score to accompany a Florentine fashion show for the widely overpriced, uninspired and often hideous fashion line.

Video: 2ManyDJ's - "As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt 2"

Back in  2011 we were one of the first to report on Soulwax’s audiovisual experiment called Radio Soulwax, a multimedia Internet radio station/app that was to span 24 hour-long mixes; well it’s 2014 and we have reached number 24 on the list.  

99% of the people who would click on this post should be very familiar with #24, it was originally released in 2002 under the duo’s 2Many DJ’s moniker and at the time was the gold standard in mashup mixes; So this post kinda of acts as a Throwback Thursday entry as well. 

Twelve years later we get a video for the mix and it was worth the wait as the Soulwax men have spent the better part of the decade fine tuning their vision and techniques to give their audience something unique, humorous and special using LP art and some rudimentary animation for magical results.

Shame they didn't include the hidden “Can't Get You Out Of My Head” track at the start of the mix, always felt it was THE highlight on a tape filled with many.

The video's privacy settings have seemingly been shifting back and forth since last night so click play below to watch or follow the link to a location where you can enjoy it.

Listen: Mo' Wax - "Urban Archaeology Kickstarter Mix"

Back in May we shared some video footage of Mo' Wax head honcho James Lavelle discussing the re-lanuch of the label and its 21 year anniversary. As reported the James and friends were planning an exhibition titled Urban Archaeology - which would then be turned into a book documenting the Mo’ Wax discography and story alongside a Kickstarter campaign to fund it all. The campaign easily reached its goal and the project is moving full steam ahead.  To celebrate James and Matthew Puffet released a special mix spanning the label’s history featuring tracks by Blackalicious, Hiroshi & Kudo, Innerzone Orchestra, Divine Styler, DJ Shadow, Unkle, Air, Nightmares On Wax, DJ Krush, Dr. Octagon, Liquid Liquid and many more clocking in at just under an hour and a half.

Over the weekend M.I.A. shared a short “mix” she produced for the Kenzo fashion show in Paris featuring some new original music by the Sri Lankin.  It's called the MATANGI mix which of course is the also the name of her forthcoming LP that is scheduled to drop April 15^th but has already been delayed several times. This is everything good about M.IA., hard percussion, international flavor and more, fingers crossed that the mix is representative of the LP.

Listen/Download: The Avalanches – DJ Set @ Splendour in the Grass 2006

A "new" mix popped up today on the Avalanches mix tape club, the mix isn’t actually a new mix in that it was recently recorded but rather in that it was made available to members of the club. This one hails from 2006 and was performed live at Splendour in the Grass in Belongil Fields, outside of Byron Bay, Australia. The mix is somewhat 80’s centric in it’s vibe but features artists from artists beyond the 1980’s including Prince, Def Leppard, Daft Punk, Gnarls Barkley, Salt N’ Pepper, The Gossip, David Bowie, Midnight Juggernauts, Bon Jovi, Mylo, The Rapture, The Rolling Stones, The Sound Of Music and more. The 45-minute mix is a total blast and is yet another reminder of why we desperately need a new LP from the collective, maybe 2013 will be the year.

Lunice put together an hour-long mix for BBC1 Xtra that features a mixture of hip hop, trap beats, electronic, pop and more dropping a TNGHT remix of “Clique” at around the 56-minute mark to end things off with a bang.

DJ Shadow’s “infamous” South Beach set has been uploaded to his SoundCloud for stream and download featuring 86 minutes of “future music” that covers a wide range of dance music styles. If you missed the story the first time round, Shadow got kicked off the decks twenty three minutes into his set on December 15th while playing at Mansion in Miami as part of his All Bases Covered tour. Apparently the promoters were just not feeling it and just couldn't wait to get their resident DJ back on to drop more Top 40-inspired tracks that one walked right up to the decks and asked Shadow to stop. The club soon faced an onslaught of criticism from all corners of the web and has since apologized for the actions and we are better for it because Shadow not only shared the intended mix in full but also gave us one from California’s Low End Theory night back in July. James made his name in music as a member of Irish black metal band Altar of Plagues but like many black metal artists also finds comfort in producing electronic music. WIFE's mood and feel is most certainly on the darker, droney, side of things than your average club banger is as is evidence in the eclectic 46-minute mix he did for ClashMusic that you can stream and download below…

Fashion Week is wrapping up in Paris and on Monday the Saint Laurent show was the main focus. The high profile event is increasingly drawing more and more big name artists to provide the backing track for the top collections with groups like the Chromatics having preformed live there only a few days ago. Parisian due Daft Punk put together a mix for the aforementioned YSL show featuring music by the late blues artist Junior Kimbrough. Of course the robotic two themselves are no strangers to being involved with the industry in one form or another.

Listen: Avalanches "A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart" Demo (ft. David Berman)

After hinting as much on Twitter, the Avalanches have released a new demo. "A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart," which features Silver Jews’ David Berman performing a spoken word poem over some faint music. Truthfully it’s not the strongest piece of music as far as getting an idea of what the Australian collective’s next album will sound like but on the plus side it is another strong indication that an album will actually see the light of day.

The Avalanches may be involved in yet another covert release. Website Pinchy & Friends dropped a new 45 minute long mysterious mixtape, Cool Gays by Cool Gaze, which closes with a track called "A track that may or may not be The Avalanches". Check it out HERE.  In reality, the closing “track” is actually a minute long snippet. The piece is a digitally twisted chunk of guitar funk, sprinkled with bits of old soul and six stringed jangle – classic Avalanches, in short. The tape itself is a sly affair, and well worth your time.
