Listen: Deafheaven – “New Bermuda” (Full LP Stream)

San Francisco’s Deafheaven are dropping a new LP and follow up to the largely successful Sunbather next week on October 2nd via Anti-. New Bermuda falls in line with the Sunbathers sound, ie. The sound of the underground in 1999-2003 or so. That’s by no means a dig, I love the era of punk music which is why I like Deafheaven and can happily state that I enjoy their latest album as well... But for those of you who missed the last record and have no idea what these guys sound like think lots of Chaos with bits of ambience mixed in along the lines of Orchid, Jeromes Dream, Saetia and anything coming out on RoboticEmpire and Hydrahead during their most prolific years.

Video: Liturgy – “Quetzalcoatl”

Brooklyn’s Liturgy dropped a video for “Quetzalcoatl” off their recently released Thrill Jockey effort, The Ark Work. The visuals are super trippy and have an epic nature to theme even though there is no traditional narrative happening, it’s pretty hypnotic and fits the bands sound and overall esthetic very well.

Listen: Liturgy - "Quetzalcoatl"

Earlier today Brooklyn’s Liturgy updated their Facebook account with a new graphic; from there it was only a matter of time before some new music was shared from the band and news of a new record, the follow up to 2011 year-end favorite Aesthethica.

March 25th will mark the release of The Ark Work via Thrill Jockey with our first taste being lead single "Quetzalcoatl".  The tune marks a major departure from previous work especially in regards to the vocal delivery which shares almost nothing in common with the black metal styling’s that marked the group’s previous efforts. Give the tune a spin below and take note of the track listing.

The Ark Work:
01 Fanfare
02 Follow
03 Kel Valhaal
04 Follow II
05 Quetzalcoatl
06 Father Vorizen
07 Haelegen
08 Reign Array
09 Vitriol
10 Total War

Listen: WIFE – “Heart Is A Far Light.”

On June 9, Tri Angle Records signee and former Altar of Plagues frontman James Kelly (aka WIFE) will release his new album What’s Between. We have a first taste of the LP via lead single “Heart Is A Far Light,” a tune that is easily the most vocal heavy effort from the man so far but still maintain the ghostly atmospherics of past works.

Listen: Twilight - "Lungs"

It’s been a great day for posts with the latest coming from black metal super group Twilight. Strangely enough I was discussing the group last Saturday with my friend Kris without any knowledge that this was coming out. Check out their second LP from 2010 entitled Monument To Time End, it's a monster of a record if you haven't already!

For those unfamiliar Twilight has had an ever-evolving lineup with each release and in 2012 added  Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth fame to the army. Unfortunately this will be the last record from the collective  with news of their new album—III: Beneath Trident's Tomb, out on March 18 via Century Media.

III features Moore, Stavros Giannopoulos (Atlas Moth), Wrest (Leviathan), N. Imperial (Krieg), and producer Sanford Parker. Get a taste of the 6 track LP below with "Lungs."

Video: WIFE – “Trails”

Yesterday we shared a new mix from recent Tri Angle signee WIFE and today as luck would have it a new video dropped from his forthcoming Stoic EP, out next week on Left Bank. The abstract video is made up of James Kelly’s own footage of sea anemones shot during his studies some years back at university and giving the video a vaguely menacing ambiance, as he sings and bellows "A trial is not an act of…/ The guilt is not an act of…" amongst rumbling bass and warm synth static.

Listen/Download: WIFE–“ClashMusic DJ Mix Podcast”

Sticking with the Tri Angle roster we also have a new mix from James Kelly aka WIFE who is gearing up to release his début ep for the label next week with Stoic. James made his name in music as a member of Irish black metal band Altar of Plagues but like many black metal artists also finds comfort in producing electronic music. WIFE's mood and feel is most certainly on the darker, droney, side of things than your average club banger is as is evidence in the eclectic 46-minute mix he did for ClashMusic that you can stream and download below…

DJ Mix Tracklisting:
GOD - Fucked
Tangerine Dream - Birth of Liquid Plejades
LowLife - A Sullen Sky
Rachel Grimes -Every Morning
Steve Reich - Pulses
Portal - Larvae
Wilderness - Post Plethoric Rhetoric

Ami Dang - Treasure
Pom Pom - Untitled (19 A)
Ambivalent & Alexi Delano - Lights Down
Shifted - Leather
Drake - Make Me Proud

Game: Black Metal Man; The Black Metal Videogame

Outside of Brütal Legend and The Rockband/Guitar Hero games metal fans don’t get much representation in the world of pixels and polygons, especially when talking about a sub genre of msuic that is considered quite extreme. Sinsquid has tried to remedy the situation with the release of Black Metal Man. As far as I can tell from its trailer, Black Metal Man is a simple, by-the-numbers platformer with a few metal elements tossed in. If we are getting picky I could point out that those metal elements are not necessarily specific to black metal but rather metal in general buuuut at 99 cents we shouldn’t be too judgmental right? You can watch a trailer for Black Metal Man below and purchase it HERE.

Listen: Krallice – “IIIIIIII”

After three albums on Profound Lore, Brooklyn-based technical black-metal band Krallice are set to self release their forth LP, Years Past Matter, as a limited-edition CD on August 25. Our first taste of the record comes in the form of “IIIIIIII,”  which for the uninitiated, is as good a starting point as any to get to know Nick McMaster and Mick Barr’s trade off vocal styling's and hyper fast  riffage. Check it out below…

Video: "Until The Light Takes Us"

Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture”
“To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story that’s as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what’s actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.”

The film is not just something for people who listen to black metal as it goes far beyond the musical aspects of what was happening in Norway at the time and examines the social political and artistic aspects as well and how they have come to influence today's art, music and culture in Norway and beyond. One of my favorite parts of the film is when the viewer is treated to an art exhibit of work influenced by the black metal scene and how something quite serious and extreme has been turned into another piece of consumable pop culture.
Featuring appearances from Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell, Varg “Count Grishnackh” Vikernes, Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg, Kjetil “Frost” Haraldstad, Olve “Abbath” Eikemo, Harald “Demonaz” Nævdal, Bjarne Melgaard, Harmony Korine.
Featuring music from Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, Ulver, Thorns, Gorgoroth, Enslaved, Boards of Canada, Black Dice, Sunn 0))), Múm, Lesser
Running time: 93 min.

Throwback Thursdays: Rock Under The Red Flag- "Birthday Boyz"

For the Final Throwback Thursday of 2011 I went with a real gem… In 2007 Vice tagged along with Brooklyn's Birthday Boyz, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix’s excellent hardcore band that preceded Liturgy, on an unprecedented tour into the hinterlands of China's underground rock scene, the result is this 30 minute documentary.

While Bjork and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs graced government-sanctioned summer stages, a small film crew followed the Boyz as they played shows and hung out with local Chinese bands in the shadier venues of Beijing, Shanghai and down the Yangtze to the bustling rock communities of the lesser-known south. The band expected debauchery, train chaos, and plenty of baijiu (Chinese moonshine) but were surprised to come upon a relatively diverse and bourgeoning music scene. Oh yeah, the best part?  The tour wasn't legal; in fact, restrictions were recently put in place to prevent foreign bands from even entering China.

Go Buy This: Kirkebrann Stave Church-Shaped Candle

The Christmas season is in full swing right now and with it many folks are busy picking up gifts for friends and family but what if you don’t celebrate the birth of Jesus, what happens if you actually despise it? Well fear not because you can now make your black metal fantasies come true and burn a stave church in the comfort of your own home! Made famous in the early 90’s when Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnack) of the one-man band BURZUM burned Fantoft church to the ground, Kirkebrann is a stave church–shaped candle in the same likeness, handmade in the city of Bergen with an edition of 666. Varg Vikernes is serving a sentence for murder and the church burnings but you don’t have to! Act now as this is the second edition of the candle, the first was limited to 100 pieces and sold out immediately, and while you are at it pick up this book if you want to know more about the craziness that was going down in Norway's black metal scene at the time.

Thanks to my buddy Simon Tagestam for the tip.

Video: Puscifer –Conditions Of My Parole Promo’s

Maynard James Keenan has released two new video teasers for Conditions of My Parole, the new album from his Puscifer project. And I have almost no idea what the what is going on in these clips called The Book Of Douche Bag, Volumes 1 & 2 but I do know that I found them weird and entertaining.
