Video: The Icarus Line – “Solar Plexus”

The Icarus Line continue to be a criminally overlooked band, unfortunately I don’t really see that changing any time soon given the musical climate of the last 5 years or so, but for those who are looking for a good dose of psychedelic punk rock that adds some Nick Cave and Stooges take note.

"Solar Plexus" is the latest song to be shared from the bands forthcoming LP, All Things Under Heaven, due October 2nd via American Primitive and it’s got a video shot by Aric Lorton to boot.

Purchase the limited edition vinyl release from Rough Trade here and make sure to check the band out live if you get a chance, I’ve seen them 6 times over the years and its always a good time. Was looking forward to seeing them this Friday at Saint Vitus but the show was canceled for some reason.

Listen: Deafheaven – “New Bermuda” (Full LP Stream)

San Francisco’s Deafheaven are dropping a new LP and follow up to the largely successful Sunbather next week on October 2nd via Anti-. New Bermuda falls in line with the Sunbathers sound, ie. The sound of the underground in 1999-2003 or so. That’s by no means a dig, I love the era of punk music which is why I like Deafheaven and can happily state that I enjoy their latest album as well... But for those of you who missed the last record and have no idea what these guys sound like think lots of Chaos with bits of ambience mixed in along the lines of Orchid, Jeromes Dream, Saetia and anything coming out on RoboticEmpire and Hydrahead during their most prolific years.

Wow it’s been six months since I last shared a new playlist, it was October, almost Halloween and the long winter was just about to get started with us. Video: Death Grips – “On GP”

Death Grips shared “On GP,” their newest song from their upcoming LP Jenny Death. The track was shared with a video of a man doing random weird activities, it’s a different sound for the trio and reminds me a little more of Zach’s work with Hella. Look for Jenny Death to drop at the end of the month.

Listen/Download” Death Grips – “Fashion Week” LP

Happy 2015 everyone! I'm Back from holiday and will slowly get the gears turning again, I should have my year end list up sometimes later in January for those asking but for now here is some new music from Death Grips.

Death Grips released a 14-track instrumental album called Fashion Week for free download on their website that you can also stream now from the player below. Fashion Week is not a substitute for  The Powers That B, the Death Grips double album consisting of the previously-released NiggasOn The Moon and the forthcoming Jenny Death, that record is now scheduled to drop on February 10th, but one never knows with this outfit.

Video: Death Grips – “Inanimate Sensation”

Death Grips officially called it quits earlier in the year with the promise of new music before year’s end and it would seem we are seeing signs of the projects imminent release as 2014’s end fast approaches.  Taken from Jenny Death, the second half of their upcoming double album the powers that b, “Inanimate Sensation” sounds a little bigger and bolder than a lot of the material on the already shared Niggas On The Moon disc. The visuals for “Inanimate Sensation” is as with all things Death Grips, unique. Taking place on a fallen jumbotron that has crashed through the floor of a basketball court, the video flicks between distorted computer graphics and MC Ride. Word on the street is that the LP will drop on December 27th which is precisely why I don't release my favorite albums of the year list until the year is officially over.

Video: Liars - "Mask Makers" (Extended Version)

The Liars manage to squeeze out yet another video before years end, this time it’s for Mess album opener “Mask Maker.” Directors of Photography Zen Sekizawa & Ernesto Lomeli keep things relatively simple with the tight shot of band member Aaron Hemphil but still retain the beauty and uneasiness of both the new extended version of the song and the existing universe of videos that have been shared from the Mess album thus far.

As an added bonus the band have made the extended version of the track available for free download for a limited amount of time, grab yours here and enjoy the video below…

Exclusive: Onomatopoeia Playlist Series: Vol.5 - "/həˈbiləmənt/"

It’s been about four months since I last shared a new playlist, it was June,  hot,  and New Yorker’s were out in full force doing their seasonal impression of someone who has always loved hiking and mountain biking before opting to move to a city that's totally inappropriate for either.  But hey, we all like to live out a fantasy from time to time and what better represents that then Halloween? So in celebration of all things make believe here is volume 5 in the series, “ /həˈbiləmənt/". The festive mix includes over three and a half hours of music from the past, present and future, spanning a wide range of genera’s alongside a healthy dose of remixes, mashups and exclusives that should help move some asses come the 31st.

I will not be posting any of the track information here or in the metadata normally attached to the mp3 files. If you would like a copy of the full track list you can contact us via email and we will gladly send it your way.

Video: The Blood Brothers Live @ Warsaw, Brooklyn October 5 2014 (Full Set)

The Blood Brothers reunited this year, and made their way to NYC over last weekend where they first played Central Park's Modern Sky Fest on Saturday and then headlined a show at Warsaw on Sunday. The crowed was definitely hyped and full of fans as the venue erupted when the Seattle band took the stage. From that point it didn’t let up with continuous, dancing, stage diving and crowd surfing from all in attendance. This was my sixth time seeing the band, the last being in 2006 or so and they sounded awesome, even more impressive since this was only their fourth show together since 2007. Looking in the crowed you could spot Blood Orange's Dev Hynes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, who plays with Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of The Blood Brothers in Head Wound City, all enjoying the set list made up of songs from the majority of their LP’s.

Set List: Guitarmy,  Trash Flavored Trash,  Fucking's Greatest Hits,  Laser Life,  Ambulance vs. Ambulance,  Burn Piano Island  Burn,  Mutiny on the Ark of the Blood Brothers,  Crimes, Beautiful Horses,  Peacock Skeleton With Crooked Feathers,  Camouflage Camouflage, Teen Heat, We Ride Skeletal Lightning,  Vital Beach,  1 2 3 4 Guitars,  Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck,  Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon.

Encore: Set Fire to the Face on Fire, Feed Me to the Forest,  Jennifer, Birth Skin/Death Leather,  The Shame.

Video: Liars – “I’m Not Gold”

The Liars really have had a great year, their new record Mess is still one of my favorites with only three more months to go in 2014 so this is me saying it WILL be on my year end list come December. The accompanying video’s for Mess’ singles so far have also been super entertaining and different from anything else that's going on out there and today’s new addition of “I’m Not Gold” is just another notch in that belt of accomplishments. Angus Andrew’s hallucinatory anguish is on full display in the video that was directed by LaurieLynch, great stuff to watch, annoying to screen capture!

Video: Cloud Nothings – “Now Hear It”

Just so no one accuses me of dropping our rock coverage in favor of all the beat driven music, here is a new video from Cloud Nothings. “Now Hear it,” which may or may not appear on the last Onomatopoeia Playlist Series edition, looks like what would happen if you mashed together old VHS footage with the Arcade Fire’s current obsession with papier-mâché bobble head masks. Maybe in the case of the Cloud Nothings, with an extra sprinkle of paranoia on top.  The clip was directed by Carpark labelmate Toro Y Moi’s touring guitarist Jordan Blackmon and follows Toro Y Moi bassist Patrick Jeffords as he travels around various scenic California locales.

Video: Drive Like Jehu and Dr. Carol Williams at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park (Full Show)

Nice, I’ve been holding off sharing any footage of the DriveLike Jehu reunion show that took place this holiday weekend at Balboa Park until quality film popped up. Chances are you’ve seen some videos in the last 48 hours but even Pitchfork’s shared footage was from a lousy angle and cut off Mark Trombino which as you know is a major sacrilege .  Well I’m here to let you know that if you are a fan and couldn't make it out to California for the gig some quality footage is now available to enjoy, but first things first.  If you are not familiar with Drive Like Jehu then please leave this website right now and go and spend some time discovering their music. I appreciate your interest and loyalty but they are much more important source of inspiration than any of the ramblings one can find here. If you are here because I’m usually the person who provides said information, here is a very brief rundown…

Drive Like Jehu were/are an American post-hardcore  band from San Diego California active from 1990 to 1995. Formed by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rick Froberg and lead guitarist John Reis following the breakup of their band Pitchfork, the band's lineup also included bassist Mike Kennedy and drummer Mark Trombino. Their music was characterized by multisectioned compositions, interlocking guitar patterns, orchestrated builds and releases, and elliptical melodies that produced a distinctive sound amongst other post-hardcore acts and impacted the evolution of hardcore punk into emo.

Rick and John have both been pretty active since Drive Like Jehu ended and can be publicly seen performing on the regular with their various projects including but not limited to Rocket From The Crypt, Hot SnakesObits, Night Marchers and more.  Mark has made his impact from behind the scenes and is heavily responsible for not just some of the most important and influential post punk/emo albums of the era but really helped define the entire scene’s sound as a whole. As for Mike? It would seem that education was Mr. Kennedy’s priority as he went back to school to study chemistry.

The band has said this will absolutely be a one off show, but I find absolutes for these types of things to often be temporary. Rumor has it the reasoning behind the show was that it was a rare opportunity to be able to use the park’s organ which Dr. Carol Williams lends her talents to for the performance.

So with little further delay sit back and enjoy Drive Like Jehu and Dr. Carol Williams at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.

Video: Liars - "Pro Anti Anti"

We are over halfway through 2014 and I can confidently say that the Liars most recent release will absolutely make my year end best of list. “Pro Anti Anti' is the latest single and video taken from the aforementioned MESS LP  and see’s the group continuing their fascination with digital effects both in the studio and via their videos. Yoona Park handles directing duties and with the help of the killer tune somehow makes something as pedestrian as a photo-shoot seem so damn sinister.

"Pro Anti Anti" is out today on limited colored vinyl and download and features remixes by Nik Void and Gabriel Gurnsey (Factory Floor), London based producer, Truss and one from the Melbourne collective Nest Of Teens (who remixed Liars’ previous single, ‘Mess On A Mission’). In addition, the single comes backed with an exclusive new track ‘Waste Fraud’ and a radio mix from Daniel Miller.

You can also grab THIS playlist to hear more Liars music.

Video: Liars - "Mess On A Mission"

YES! For the seventeenth installment of the UO Music Video series, the Liars have teamed up with wunderkind director Luis Cerveró on the song "Mess on a Mission" off the bands fantastic new album Mess. The clip is most certainly as unique as the band themselves are.
