Two new episodes of Red Bull Music Academy’s fantastic
series of mini-documentaries entitled H∆SHTAG that explore the relationship of
new music and the web. The
third installment looks at hip-hop, more specifically the micro-genre of Cloud Rap and features some heavy hitters associated with the sound including MainAttrakionz, SpaceGhostPurrp, Flatbush Zombies and more who speak on
their influences and how the internet has mutated a sound that was once
determined by ones region.
Episode 4 comes in strong with an all-star cast focusing on
beats music and its origins in LA to the world-wide phenomenon it is today. Featuring
interviews with the likes of Flying Lotus, TNGHT, Shlohmo, XXYXX, The Gaslamp
Killer, Benji B, and more talking about how location, region and of
course the internet has affected their genre and more specifically the
opportunity for collaborations between beat makers and rappers living thousands of miles away from each other.
As reported the Yeah
Yeah Yeahs are gearing up to release their new L,P Mosquito, on April
16th. So far we have heard some live renditions of the new material but “Sacrilege”
marks our first proper taste of a studio recording. It's also worth noting that the song features a full 24-piece gospel
choir, stream it below...
Dark Time Sunshine, the duo made up of Onry Ozzborn of
Rhymesayer’s Grayskul and producer Zavala dropped a video for ANX tune “Take My
hand” featuring Aesop Rock and Swamburger. Aesop seems to have something logged
pretty far up in his nose on this one.
Kool A.D. recently dropped his two mixtapes19 and 63
and now the Mike
Finito produced standout “Moneyball” from the 63 tape gets
its own video. As is most of the time with Kool the video is as humorous as it
is eccentric as the man himself.
Kendrick Lamar‘s dropped another video from his critically and commercially successful LP good kid, m.A.A.d. city via the Drake assisted and Janet Jackson sampling “Poetic Justice.” The video paints a story of love and murder.
Having already shared the fantastic “Mute” and “Dropla” from
Youth Lagoon’s forthcoming sophomore effort , Wondrous Bughouse, you should have
been hungry for more, I know I was as both aforementioned tunes offered an impressive amount of growth
from the already capable Trevor Powers. You can now stream Wondrous Bughouse in its entirety before its March 5th release on Fat Possum. Check out the ten
tracks via NPRHERE or below...
I was getting worried that it was almost March and we hadn't seen anything in the New Year from our favorite satanic chef but thankfully his
evilness returned today with a new recipe for vegan lasagna. Grab your black cauldron and check the video below which offers a step by step guide on how to put this spell together for some tasty results.
Having already shared an audio stream and live video for
HAIM's “Falling” it was only a matter of time before a video turned up, this one was directed by Tabitha Denholmand finds the trio wandering in the wilderness.
As an added bonus I also included a short behind the scenes making of video.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Diplo has the best videos as far as pure fun is concerned. “Butter’s Theme” featuring Gent & Jawns from the Express Yourself EP is no exception to the rule, directed
by Reuben Dangor and Gabriel Ayache the video also acts as the first video
premiere from Diplo, A-Trak,
and Skrillex‘s new video
channel, POTATO.
I wouldn’t call myself the biggest fan of Greece’s Keep Shelly In Athens, others contributors here have more of an affinity for the duo
than I have had in the past, it’s not that I think they are bad, I just felt
there was a little to much hype surrounding them, and having grown up in Greece
myself, I felt I could hear their strong 90’s influences a little too much.
Having said that it’s been a while since they have released any new material
and it would seem that the time away has been well spent. “Madmen Love” ditches
their traditional lo-fi sound for some more beefed up production and if this is
any indication of what their debut LP on Cascine will sound like it’s a good
thing.
Seattle’s Blue Sky Black Death has kept very busy as of late having dropped notable collaborative albums with both Nacho Picasso and Deniro Farrar. The production duo has also provided beats for other quite a few other MCs in the last year. Euphoric compiles some of their best recent instrumentals and gives them one nice home While such a collection can sometimes sounds scattered, the duo’s sound is a distinctive and cohesive one making this release feel like a proper LP. Stream the 13 tracks below for free and if you like what you hear pick it up for a small fee over at the bands Bandcamp.
We have some catching up to do with being away for the last
5 days so why not start things up with some free music. We have already shared
a handful of new tracks from ArabbMuzik who was scheduled to drop his new
mixtape For Professional Use Only last Friday and so he did. Stream and
download the 20 track tape below courtesy of the MPC master, which definitely
sees the producer trying some new things with both great and mixed results.
Been a way for a couple days so it’s time to play some catch
up.
Bat for Lashesreturn with a new video for “Lillies” from LP number 3, The
Haunted Man. The clip features Khan surrounded by a group of fun Muppet creatures
reminiscent of Where The Wild Things Are and some cool animation, check it
below…
Odd Future head hancho Tyler, the Creatorposted the video for a new song called "Domo
23", which acts as the first single from his forthcoming "sophomore" album Wolf. As always the video takes a humorous approach and
is set in a professional wrestling match between Tyler and crew member Domo Genesis, with Earl Sweatshirt as the referee.
Tyler wrote on Twitter. "I'M SO NERVOUS WHAT IF
EVERYONE HATE IT AND I GO BROK FUCK AHHH... THE FAD IS OVER AND I GOTTA WORK AT
SOMEWHERE LIKE THESE REGULAR NIGGAS AHHH NO IM SHAKING".
More love stories today as Passion Pit drop a lighthearted
and quirky video for “Carried Away” from their sophomore LP, Gossamer. Directed byBen and Alex Brewer and featuring One Tree Hill actress Sophia Bush, the viewer gets to experience the ups and downs of being in a relationship.
Continuing with the theme of Valentine’s Day we got a new
one from L.A. singer Banks. You might know the voice from her collaboration
with Lil
Silva on the club joint “Work.” “Before I Met You,”, is a much darker affair
representing the heartache side of today’s holiday with its crushingly despairing
message to the other half of a failing relationship. A good first single
from the artist with some very enjoyable production which hopefully is a key
indicator on what we can expect from her in 2013.
After getting our first new material from The Strokes in
quite some time via “OneWay Trigger,” a second tune has been made available by the NY band in
anticipation of the March 26th release date of their fifth LP, Comedown
Machine. Check out “All The Time" Below…
TNGHT’s Hudson Mohawke continues his annual Valentine's Day tradition of releasing a
love-themed mix called called Slow Jams. Chapter VI is available to
download for free over on his website (or below) and features the smooth sounds of
Patrice Rushen, Nona Hendryx, the System, Todd Rundgren, and Bobby
Caldwell to name but a few. Of course you can still grab the previous chapters
if you don’t already have them from HERE, AWWWWW YEAAAAHHHH.
"Dangerous Proposal’" by Nacho Diaz is a 6 Colour hand pulled
silkscreen, 300 gsm Somerset velvet white, Edition 80. Size 59.6 X 46 cm. £95
available HERE.
The Weeknd has released the video for “Twenty Eight,” which appears on his debut studio release, Trilogy. The video is most certainly Not Safe For Work and features quite a few topless strippers dancing as a pensive looking Abel Tresfaye watches from afar. Check it below or via The Weeknd's website...
LA indie rock band Local Nativesdropped a video for “Heavy
Feet” from their recently released Hummingbird LP. The charming video follows three aging blind men who build
model airplanes, while some magical sandwiches sing the words to the song, great stuff.
AaabMUZIK‘s For Professional Use Only mixtape is out February 15, we’ve already shared “The Prince Is Coming” and now we can share a second cut by the name of “Never Have To Worry.” This one blends the EDM vibes with some hard-hitting hip-hop for great results.
We’ve got a new track and video from Aesop Rock and KimyaDawson aka, the Uncluded, entitled “Earthquake”. The former Moldy Peach has teamed
up with the verbose emcee before but it’s good to see it wasn't just a one off from the duo and that we might be getting a full length in 2013.
The video for "Oddfellows" complements Tomahawk’s sound
perfectly, directed by Vincent Forcier, we
get some fun-house styled animation in the form of demented cartoon sketches of
ghouls and demons superimposed on top of distorted black and white performance
footage of the band.
HAIM
released the studio recording of their track “Falling” last night; you may
recall we shared a live version of the tune back in the first week of January.
The song has a playful baseline and one of those trademark catchy choruses’. No
word on if the song will be officially released on another EP or on the sisters
debut LP scheduled to drop sometime this year.
Purity Ring decided to release a free studio recording of
their cover of Soulja Boy’s “Grammy.” perhaps to coincide with the 55th Grammy Awards that took place last night? Whatever the case it’s free music and a fun
cover that the band have been performing live on their most recent tour, check
it below…
After sharing "Dropla" last
month, Trevor Powers, aka Youth
Lagoon, shared another equal parts dreamy, weird and wonderful track from
his forthcoming Sophomore LP, Wondrous Bughouse. Stream “Mute” below and look for it on the new
LP which is out on March 5 through Fat Possum.
Only a day or two after releasing a stream of his new single,
“Retrograde” James Blake drops the music video of the noteworthy tune. Director
Martin de Thurah, who also helmed the St. Vincent and David Byrnes video for “Who”
and Feist’s “Anti-Pioneer”, provides the equally memorable video.
A couple weeks back we shared the first episode of a new series
of mini documentaries, called H∆SHTAG$, which looks at some of the
most relevant themes in music emerging from the web and beyond today. This
week we bring you episode 2 entitled “Don’t Call It Post Dubstep” which
features interviews with Mount Kimbie,Bondax, Deadboy, Dave Hayes of
Soundcloud, Thristian of theBoiler Room and others on the ever-evolving world
of dubstep/garage/bass music. So far the series has been very enjoyable and
informative and is recommended to anyone who calls themselves a fan of music
regardless if the specific genre being discussed is something you gravitate
towards or not.
UK producer and Brainfeeder recording artist Lapalux enters 2013 with another slice of his cloudy, genre-melding sound. “BETHR” mixes some R&B styling’s with glitchy electronic beats and soulful vocals for some terrific results, stream it below…
I’ve been playing this on heavy rotation the last week so I’m happy to be able to share album number fifteenth from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Push the Sky Away, in full today. Released next Tuesday in the U.S. via the band's own label, Bad Seed Ltd, we've already shared videos for "We No Who U R"and "Jubilee Street" but really every track on this is a highlight.
Recorded in France and produced by Nick Launay (who produced the last three Bad Seeds records, and two Grinderman albums.)
After some time away from the spotlight James Blake made his
return today with the premiere of his new single “Retrograde”. The song is set
to appear on Blake’s forthcoming LP, Overgrown, out on April 8th. Always
the master of negative space James cleverly builds “Retrograde” up from a
melody he coo’s during the opening bars, building his beat up around it and
throwing down some appropriately soft vocals to bring it all together.
Liars have shared a stark, minimal, black-and-white
video for the title track off their 2012 record, WIXIW.
The video was directed by Alex/2Tone and depicts a man's repeated failed attempts at a
slam dunk alongside some African looking tribal type costumed dancer. 2Tone recently
told Entertainment Weekly, it's like the Greek myth of
Sisyphus, in which a man is punished with unsuccessfully rolling a boulder
up a hill for eternity, "as told by a young ballplayer lost in a haze of
codeine and prescription weed."
Weird stuff but hey this is the Liars we are talking about
here.
With Original Fake’s impending closure this May comes news of what may end up being the final KAWSCompanion release from the brand. Of course fans are familiar with the pose as it first made its appearance as the "Passing Through” installation in 2011 and later as a high end 4 ft sculpture sold to ballers; but now it looks like us common folk might be able to grab one for our collections, details to follow as they are made available.
AraabMuzik hits the net with a track from his
forthcoming mixtape For Professional Use Only, out on February 15th. "The Prince Is Coming" mixes things up with some great bongo drums,
check it below…
In two days a pair of new mixtapes from Kool A.D., 19 and 63,
are scheduled to drop. We have shared the full track list as well as both “Eroika” and “Beautiful NakedPsychedelic Gherkin Exploding Tomato Sauce All Over Your Face” from 19 thus far, and today we got another one in the form of the Mike Finito produced “Moneyball”
from the 63 tape. Stream it below and
check out the full track listing for 63.
The new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album, Push
the Sky Away, is officially out February 19. And we are happy to say it’s
another “instant classic.” We've already
shared the video for lead single "We No Who U R" and heard a stream of "Jubilee
Street" via a lyrical video but now we get the official visuals for the
track from director John Hillcoat and featuring actor Ray Winestone.
Nick had this to say on the process…
"It was a real pleasure hanging around the set and
watching Ray do his thing. He is a master. What a great actor. And of course,
working with my friend and collaborator John Hillcoat is always a blast."
Woodkiddropped his latest single, “I Love You” today. As always
the visuals are top notch and continue the epic feeling and story line seen in “Iron” and “Run Boy Run”. This is the first single from The Golden Age LP which is due to drop on
March 18.
The Video features Russian model Matvey Lykov hence the Russian dialogue at the start that roughly translates to this...
Priest: "Today I’m gonna tell you a story about man who
drowned in cold waters of ocean. After the loss of loved one. It’s story about
man who died twice.”
Canadian producer Zodiac dropped a new tune to coincide with
the release of the first installment of Red Bull’s H∆SHTAG$ mini-documentary series that we shared last week, in which he also makes an
appearance. “PE1” is a little bit different to what we have become accustomed
to from the producer via his ep and work with the Weeknd, with its beat that
sounds like it’s collapsing on itself and distorted moans vocal snippet you
might call this one slightly more artsy.
MS MR
have quickly followed up the release of their latest single “Fantasy” with a
video. The clip features cheerleaders puking glitter which you know is fun.
Unless you are living under a rock you would know that after
22 years, My Blood Valentine are back with a new album. It was announced early
in the day on Saturday that the legendary band would be releasing their new
album for fans to purchase off their website, and at 7pm if you were like me and thousands of others, you were clicking refresh like a mad man till you could
purchase the thing(it took me about two hours). The record, which is titled
simply m b v, is available to stream through My Bloody Valentine’sYouTubechannel,
check out "She Found Me" below for a taste.
Tame Impala’s
side project, Pond, have shared the first single off their upcoming album, Hobo
Rocket. “Giant Tortoise” is a psychedelic rock affair that should please anyone
who calls them self a fan of Impala’s work, with stacked layers fuzzed-out
guitars and booming echoing vocals. Apperently the band will release the record
this spring with each member is also planning to release solo albums and side
projects on the same day.
Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf visited the
Boiler Room to put on ridiculously long 12-hour DJ set that coincidentally will
accommodate all you folks throwing Super Bowl party’s today with a play list.
You know you can expect to hear a variety of musical genera’s on this one with
some exclusives peppered in throughout. Stream the whole thing, which is cut up into
three sections, below via Soundcloud or even watch part 1 and 3 via youtube if
you prefer and check out a track listing to get an idea of what’s what for the
