What we got here are the instrumentals of Spaceghostpurrp’s
recently re-released “Mysterious Phonk” Lp for all you remixers out there. Or perhaps
you are one of the many who dig the beats but don’t love Space’s bleak lyrics?
Whatever the case 4AD has
let loose the instrumentals from the Florida MC/producer's collection. They're available as a free download HERE now and on limited edition vinyl September 3. Grab em’ now and don’t
get yah head bust…
P.S. It might take a couple of attempts to grab the download as there seems to be a lot of traffic hitting it up but I assure you it's there.
UPDATE: HERE is a new link that should work better.
MellowHype’s Hodgy Beats and Left Brain from the Odd Future
squad, presents their new visuals for the track "La Bonita". The song comes

Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner is releasing her second 7″ single with her Flock of Dimes side
project on Merge Records next month. “Curtain” is the single’s a-side. Wasner
described the lyrics as documenting “the thoughtless, obsessed joy of new
love.” There is a lot going on in the
tune but it all works very well together; the single is limited to 1,000 copies
so get one from Merge while you still can.
Yeasayer share their latest video for “Longevity” , a
track from their recent LP Fragrant World. The video shows the band gradually aging and ultimately decaying in
the studio, pretty cool stuff…
Hardcore giants Converge
have a new LP on the way. All We Love We Leave Behind, the follow up to 2009's
excellent Axe to Fall, is out October 9 on Epitaph (with a vinyl
edition on frontman Jacob Bannon's Deathwish Inc. imprint). The collection will also be
available in a 17-song Deluxe Edition featuring a hardcover 48-page
book that includes full-color art from Bannon. (All versions are available for pre-order now.)
Unlike the last few offerings, All We Love We Leave
Behind doesn't feature outside guests or collaborators. It was recorded
and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou; he and the core band handled all aspects of
the production. It's an especially raw, live-sounding offering. But
perhaps the biggest difference to your ears, if the first single and video below
are any indication, are Jake’s vocals. "Aimless
Arrow", is the most” singy” I have ever heard the band be, check out the Max Moore-directed video
for the song below….
A$AP Mob drops their Lord$ Never Worry Mixtape featuring the

set to release the follow up to 2007's Autumn of the Seraphs with
their new album, Information Retrieved, which is due out on October 16. We
got a stream of "Proceed to Memory" off the album available to listen
to below.
I could be wrong but the art work looks like it might have been done by Daniel Danger.
Seattle beat makers Blue Sky Black Death drop
a treat in the form of a new mixtape entitled, Aquatic Reverie. The 14

sound. Aquatic Reverie is presented by Behold The Destroyer and
available now for free download.

Sleigh Bells unveiled their latest video from their sophomore
effort, Reign Of Terror, this morning. “End Of The Line”, was directed by
Sleigh Bells’ Derek Miller and Gregory Khon…
Here is a video short that features interviews with the
Director and Assistant Curator of the BAM/PFA on
Barry McGee's midcareer retrospective, on view at the UC Berkeley Art Museumand Pacific Film Archive. The show opened on August 24 and is running through
December 9, 2012.
"Throughout his career," writes Alex Baker in the exhibition catalog,
"Barry McGee has continued to surprise and contradict expectations."
Including rarely seen early etchings, letterpress printing trays and liquor
bottles painted with his trademark cast of down-and-out urban characters,
constellations of vibrant op-art painted panels, animatronic taggers, and an
elaborate re-creation of a cacophonous street-corner bodega, along with many
new projects, this first midcareer survey of the globally influential San
Francisco--based artist showcases the broad range of McGee's compassionate and
vivacious work.
McGee, who trained professionally in painting and printmaking at the San
Francisco Art Institute, began sharing his work in the 1980s, not in a museum
or gallery setting but on the streets of San Francisco, where he developed his
skills as a graffiti artist, often using the tag name "Twist."
McGee's use of this and other monikers—such as Ray and Lydia Fong—as well as
his frequent collaborations can make it difficult to precisely situate the
artist's unique authorship. Using a visual vocabulary drawn from graffiti,
comics, hobo art, and sign painting, McGee celebrates his Mission District
neighborhood while at the same time calling attention to the harmful effects of
capitalism, gentrification, and corporate control of public space. His
often-humorous paintings, drawings, and prints—all wrought with extraordinary
skill—push the boundaries of art: his work can be refreshingly informal in the
gallery and surprisingly elegant on the street.
McGee has long viewed the city itself as a living space for art and activism,
but his more recent work has brought the urban condition into the space of the
gallery. Increasingly, his installation environments express the anarchic
vitality of the inner-city street, incorporating overturned cars and trucks,
and often spill beyond the frame of the gallery or museum.
Barry McGee is organized by Director Lawrence Rinder, with Assistant Curator
Dena Beard. Barry McGee is made possible by lead support from The Andy Warhol
Foundation for the Visual Arts and presenting sponsor Citizens of Humanity.
Major support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Ratio 3,
Cheim and Read, the East Bay Fund for Artists at the East Bay Community
Foundation, The Robert Lehman Foundation, Prism, Stuart Shave/Modern Art, and
Cinelli. Additional support is provided by Rena Bransten, Gallery Paule Anglim,
Jeffrey Fraenkel and Frish Brandt, Suzanne Geiss, Nion McEvoy, and the BAM/PFA
Trustees."(via)
Remember back in June when Wayne Coyneand The Flaming Lipspissed off Erykah Badu because of that
NSFW video for “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” that featured a very nude
Badu and sister? (you can still link to it from HERE) Well, the Flaming Lips song
now has a new singer altogether – Badu has been replaced by Amanda Palmer of the
Dresden Dolls.
Not for nothing, because if someone doesn’t want there to be
a video of them nude readily available on the internet, I prefer Amanda’s
vocals to Badu’s. Check the VERY NSFW video below….
Back in July we shared the audio for Ariel Pink’s Haunted
Graffiti tune, “Only In My Dreams”, off Mature Themes, the bands recently
released LP. Today we got the Travis Peterson directed video for you staring
the bands frontman striking out and rebounding in love again and again and
again, check it below …
We sharedJneiro Jarel and DOOM’s collaborative album, Key
To the Kuffs, under the appropriately named JJ DOOM moniker a week back and
now, we’re seeing the first visuals from the project. “Guv’nor" stars the masked villain himself
spitting his rhymes in an abandoned warehouse.
Funny story, I had an Italian friend who mistakenly thought
a mutual British friend of ours was super political because he used the word governor
a lot, this friend was the furthest thing from political in his views and
opinions so it took a good long while to figure out what was the reasoning
behind his assumption, hilarity ensued.
Major Lazer
is set to release their sophomore effort entitled, Free The Universe, in the
near future. We already shared the audio
for “Get Free”
not long ago, but today we get the steamy visuals to the laid back jam
featuring Amber Coffman from Dirty Projectors on vocals. This
is probably the most straight forward video I’ve ever seen from Diplo but
enjoyable none the less. Free The Universe is set to drop Nov. 6 via
Mad Decent.
Jeremy Rose aka Zodiac is set to
release a 5 track EP via Jacques
Greene'sVase label
digitally on September 24 on and vinyl October 8th. The sound is what you would
expect from someone who was originally involved in the early beginnings of the
Weekend’s sound and vibe. Jesse Boykins III provides the vocal work for “Come”
which you can now stream below.
Here is a second track from forthcoming Lp, Moms, from Portland’s
Menomena. "Capsule" is another slice of goodness from the band
featuring some distinctive looped drums and a very pleasant flute solo (That line just aged me by 30 years). The album's out September 18 via Barsuk. Head here to listen to the first single, "Heavy Is as
Heavy Does" if you missed it the first time round’.
Killer Mike’s latest video see’s the Emcee being

Well here is a little treat, Powell Peralta has decided to
give away their 1987 film The Search For Animal Chin as a fee download! At the time the film was the benchmark for
what skate films should be acting as one of the first skateboarding films
to have a "plot".
The Bones Brigade travels around California,
Nevada,
and Hawaii to
different skate spots in search of a wisened old man, Won Ton
"Animal" Chin. The movie is of the old-school nomadic,
skate-everything-in-your-path genre with interludes of stopping to rip-up a big
ramp, pool or kicker. After much searching and skateboarding, they locate a
large ramp in the desert. They also find a Chinese character on the inside of
the ramp's spine. They conclude that in searching for Mr. Chin, they may have
found his spirit.”
Staring Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance
Mountain and Tommy Guerrero. Download it HERE in exchange for your email
address.
You are cordially invited to a road trip in the desert. No guys allowed unless we meet some random dudes on the way.
Dress Code: World of Warcraft avatars based on contemporary pop icons. Bring weapons and pets.
Yours truly,

Ok so I completely made that up, but that has to be the premise of this video for Grimes' "Genesis", which was teased just a few days ago. The track is one of the many highlights off her brilliant Visions LP and I for one did not have these images in my mind while listening to it these past months, which is not to say this isn't a great video. It's yet another glimpse into Grimes' unique vision and creative mind, directed by Claire Boucher.
One of my favorite bands, Austin’s ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, are set to release their new album Lost Songs on
October 22nd via Richter Scale. The album promises to be an overtly political statement.
Conrad Keely and Jason Reece will again be joined by Autry Fulbright and Jamie
Miller, who helped on the band last record, Tao Of The Dead.
Today we can share lead cut, 'Up To Infinity,' which the
band recently dedicated to Pussy Riot. Check
it out below alongside some words from Conrad Keely.
"Hello, we are ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of
Dead. This is our eighth album, it was recorded this summer in Hannover, Germany.
The music was inspired by the apathy to real world events that has plagued the
independent music scene now for over a decade. The first preview of our album,
entitled “Up To Infinity”, is about the Syrian civil war. We believe that
tyranny and despotism suffered by any people, anywhere, is intolerable and
should not be treated as an internal matter, but completely justifies
intervention by the international community".
"We would like to also dedicate this song to Pussy
Riot."
So every time we post a video here at Onomatopoeia we do a
little screen capture in order to have a graphic to accompany the story. Diplo’s new video for “Set It Off,” featuring
Lazerdisk Party Sex, presented a problem, as there were just too many amazing
moments worth capturing! Seriously folks, this video really does take the cake
and at the same time is quite simple, I’ll just let you press play below
without saying anymore.
On September 25, Load Records will release an EP of Rhode Island noise band, Lightning Bolt's, "lost tracks", called Oblivion Hunter.
"Since forming in 1994, Lightning Bolt has taken a zig zag
path to recording, playing and touring. Following in this pattern is the
release of Oblivion Hunter, a collection of the band’s epic recording sessions over
the last few years. Oblivion Hunter is a real cool time – loose, hard and
loopy. From the get-go the sound is amped-up and free with an ear on the
railroad tracks to the big sounds of industry and clamor. Bass sounds jump out
of the speaker cones that conjure up ears in alien propulsion systems, nights
in faraway wind tunnels, and brutal beatings at Gitmo. Drums and assorted FX
pop in and out with the resolve of a finger quivering over the A-bomb button
drunk on power and convinced of your need. This record is one of the few
necessary things in your grim stretch of existence, played by a band with 20
years of total conviction to the destruction of your ear drums. The net is cast
decidedly further this time out with North Pole square dancing colliding with
shock troop whiplash, executed with the spontaneous interplay of neutrino
collision. It is time for you to binge and purge. You are now the Oblivion
Hunter."
Track Listing:
1. King Candy
2. Baron Wasteland
3. Oblivion Balloon
4. Fly Fucker Fly
5. The Soft Spoken Spectre
6. Salamander
7. World Wobbly Wide
Dinosaur Jr. get some help from Funny Or Die for their new
video for “Watch The Corners,” off their forthcoming LP, I Bet on Sky. What we got here is the story of young/forbidden
love at the super market. The band themselves only show up in digitally blurred
cameo form, an effect that is whimsically introduced as part of the narrative. Tim Heidecker of Tim and Eric fame plays the
protective father. The Director Brothers direct.
AesopRock let loose his latest set of
visuals for “Cycles to Gehenna” off of his recently released, and very good LP,
Skelethon. Perhaps taking a cue from Kanye we get some lovely artsy type
footage of ballerinas, or perhaps rappers just like the classically trained
dancers as a whole? Can’t say for certain but it all works very well. Directed
by Ben and Pete Lee.
Here is a little treat … Tri Angle Records artist, Holy Other, will be dropping his debut lp, Held, in about a week and we got a full
stream of it available to hear right now below. The Holy Other formula is
intact dark, dreamy, slow build up’s and much attention to detail making this
another home run from the Manchester producer.
After hinting as much on Twitter, the Avalanches have released a new demo. "A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart," which features Silver Jews’ David Berman performing a spoken word poem over some faint music. Truthfully it’s not the strongest piece of music as far as getting an idea of what the Australian collective’s next album will sound like but on the plus side it is another strong indication that an album will actually see the light of day.
So this one came out several weeks ago surrounded by some buzz due to a beef with Azealia Banks but I never got
around to posting it, in the time since I’ve heard Angel Haze’s excellent free mixtape,
Reservations, about a dozen times. So if that’s not a stamp of approval then check
out the video for “New York” where a masked Angel haunts tunnels and the New York
City subway system in the Adrienne Nicole-directed video and maybe your mind will be changed.
“Born To Suffer” Is the latest tune to get the video
treatment from Xiu Xiu’s 2012 LP Always. More lo-budget artsy weirdness from the group,
there seems to be a religious undertone to the video but that’s just my
unofficial interpretation of it at the moment.
Animal Collective are gearing up to release their
follow up to 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. Centipede Hz will be out on
September 4th via Domino but you can now listen to the whole thing HERE till
9pm EST tonight. And just in case you missed it, we shared the Danny Perez
directed video for lead single, "Today's Supernatural" on Friday which you can view
HERE.
Hey Ho from Chambaland and myself and a happy Friday to
everyone. So here is the latest Perestroika mashup, we finished it off a couple weeks back but have been sitting
on it for a brief moment while tying up some loose ends with the art work. This
time round’ we went with some R&B, via Avant, for the acapella, while using
Grimes as our instrumental. We like to think this re-work gives the whole thing
a slight hipster R&B vibe, maybe not lyrically but sonically, Let us know
what do you think?

Animal Collectiveare gearing up to release their latest
album, Centipede Hz, on September 4th. We already heard lead single "Today's Supernatural" and now we get the Danny Perez directed video. Featuring a colorful go-kart racing in the desert,
trippy visuals, face paint, dismembered arms that beat up a weird dragon thing,
a pretty intense ending and more strange and fun stuff.
Lunice has been a busy man; having only just released his
joint project with Hudson Mohawke, TNGHT, the Canadian producer is involved
with a new clothing line.Good Kids, “dedicated
to the progression of music and style in Montréal, and across the globe.” is a collaboration
with a Montréal boutique, Off The Hook. In celebration , Lunice drops a
new track and video called “Believe Dat”, which you might have caught at his
Boiler Room set recently.
"See Thru to U" featuring Erykah Badu, is our first album exclusive taste of Flying Lotus' forthcoming LP, Until the Quiet Comes. Out on October 2 via Warp the Lp also
will feature guest spots from Thom Yorke,
Jonny Greenwood, Thundercat, Niki Randa, and Laura Darlington.
Skateboarder Magazine’s Senior Photographer Jonathan Mehring
got together with the globetrotting filmer Patrik Wallner to plan and film a
skateboarding trip to Vietnam. The ambitious trip was especially difficult on
old school motorbikes, the only method of transport used while there. But as
they say, the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward, which is probably why the
likes of Jerry Hsu, Keegan Sauder, Joey Pepper, Javier Mendizibal and Michael
"Michi" Mackrodt were game to accompany them on this journey down
nearly the entire length of Vietnam despite some of their limited past
experience's with doing so." The trip didn’t produce a whole lot of skating but The lush
surroundings that make up Vietnam are the real treat in this very well shot
twenty plus minute film.
Earlier this week we shared a slice of goodness from JJ DOOM, the collaboration between DOOM and producer/rapper Jneiro Jarel, today we got the whole album available for streaming. Keys to the Kuffs is out August 20 through Lex Records. Featuring collaborations with Damon Albarn, Portishead's Beth Gibbons and Goodie Mob's Khujo Goodie to name but a few.
Before puppeteer pioneer Jim Henson brought joy to the entertainment
world with his world famous Muppets there was Jim Henson the ad man. We all got bills to pay and sometimes those
checks come from advertisers. Jim Henson’s early works of the 60’s and 70’s included commercials and short sales films for the
likes of Wilkins Coffee, IBM, AT&T, La
Choy and PakNit Fabrics to name but a few. The revenue gathered during the
time helped Jim and his future wife, Jane, grow their own vision, kick-starting
a prolific career and leading to several puppet proto-types that would one day
be some of the most recognizable characters in pop culture. Henson didn’t necessarily
express a personal preference for any of these companies but used the time to develop
and perfect his artistic vision, often throwing in some light hearted cynicism as a wink to the adult audience. For this week’s Throwback Thursday we share some of
those early ads and instructional videos that I personally first enjoyed at the
Museum of Moving Image’s recent retrospective of Henson’s work. For those that
couldn’t make the trip out to NY at the time let this be your window. Oh yeah
and Fuck Chick-fil-A.
“The Paperwork Explosion,” Jim Henson’s weirdly sinister IBM
ad from 1967
In the 1960s, IBM tapped Jim Henson and composer Raymond
Scott to create"The
Paperwork Explosion," a four-minute advertisement for the MT/ST
word-processing machine. The commercial was jarring brew of jargon and flashing
images seemingly custom-made for an office-drone dystopia.
Cookie Monster’s debut -IBM Training Video from 1967. At the time, the greenish monster's name was actually Arnold
the Munching Monster.
A Set of Wilkins Coffee Commercials Made by Jim Henson back
in the 1950's when setting explosions and hitting Muppets was acceptable.
AT&T’s crappy service won’t put a smile on your face but maybe this video from 1963 will. According to AT&T, Henson made the video for a seminar being given to business owners on what was then a groundbreaking topic — data communications.
Delbert the La Choy Dragon appeared in television commercials for La Choy chow mein from 1965 to 1967. In some commercials he was teamed with Mert, a meek, bespectacled Muppet spokesman.
